A Look Back at The Latos Trade!

I think it is safe to say the Reds personnel made this a winner for the Reds. Alonso is the only player to have any promise out of the prospects landed by the Padres. The Reds picked the right catcher to ship out and the right one to keep it appears as well. Looks like Walt and company deserve some credit when so many of us bad mouthed this trade when it happened.
Walt looks good again. Not to many times he gets beat on trades.
The key to this trade was Grandel vs. Mesoraco. Devin is defiantly the better player on defense and offense. He looks like he belongs behind the plate now and the way the starters are throwing I think they are all on the same page and comfortable now.
    Thoughts?

Definitely won the trade, I just wish we would've given Latos the extension instead of Bailey.

Wouldn't say that at all. I've been saying since day 1 though that this was a good trade.

There should still be money left for him. Reds are about to get a new TV deal and they're setting attendance records. The money will be there, it's just going to come down to whether or not they'll want to spend it.

Ill give you the "Debbie Downer" version....

Wish somehow we could have retained Alonzo. He would benefit from hitting in GABP.. In turn we could have traded Votto and basically addressed all other issues (SS, LF) and still have money to spend. I like Latos a lot though. But could have done without the Baily signing.

    Was that downer enough? lol

Votto is obviously playing injured and STILL makes a difference when he's in the lineup. At the time of the trade there's no way in hell you move Votto he was one of the best hitters in baseball and can still be up there when healthy.

There is no doubt Joey is a valuable asset to the team. However I believe you could've bought a whole infield at the price that you were paying him over the years. Just my thoughts.

Let's not forget that the worst contract on the team (Ludwick) is done after this season. Bailey has thrown two no-no's and almost had another this year...I think locking him up was the right thing to do, the money may seem excessive, but I promise you there are worse contracts for pitching in the majors right now. Bailey is still also considerably young. Ask this, who would you rather have in the rotation right now? Bailey or Cingrani? Without locking up Bailey, who would the Reds brought in to replace him? Also, he may be the most trade-able of our pitchers which, considering the injuries to Votto and Phillips, may be something intriguing as July winds down...
