He's a good player and all, but that is a pretty large contract.

Representative of the projected salary cap increases over the next few years, or simply a big overpay?

Wow... I thought I misread it and it said 3.8 to which I was even a little surprised that it was that high. 5.8 AAV is ridiculous. Massive overpay and to be honest I just don't see it in his game (barring a lingering injury this year that was undisclosed).

Part of me expects larger salaries in general with the cap going up. But I definitely didn't think Callahan would get this. Anyone remember what he was asking for from the Rangers in extension negotiations last year?

I was reading that NYR offered him 6x6 but Cally wanted a full NMC and NYR said no. But Rangers fans can correct me on that.

It is the years to me that was the larger obstacle than the salary. Cally is a good player but with a lot of miles and injuries.

I think this deal is fair. Be prepared for salaries/cap hits to be higher than you would expect due to the Salary Cap going up big time over the next two years and who knows after that. It is going to make it really hard to compare deals because teams that locked up players long term, and that were able to, are going to be looking pretty good. Honestly, I thought the Getzlaf/Perry deals were a bit much...but with the increase in Salary Cap, they are going to look pretty good going forward. Just something people are going to have to get used to.

5.8 isn't bad if he's the same player he was in the past. 30-40 goals a season 250+hits 50+takeaway and blocked shots. if so, not bad at all.

Where are you getting your numbers? Callahan has never been a 30 goal scorer, let alone 30-40 (he had 29 in 2011). Also, he hasn't hit 250 hits and 50 takeaways/blocks in 2011 as well. he rebounded well in Tampa and it'll be interesting to see if he continues that over the life of this contract, but expecting this kind of production from Cally is a little absurd.

His problems has been with injuries.
    He's had 250+ hits 50+ takeaways/blocks multiple seasons without a full season.

Also plays 20+ minutes a game with penalty kill time

Callahan was offered 36 million for 6 years in New York, he denied. Instead, got traded and signed with Tampa Bay for 34.8 million for 6 years.

You never answered his question. When did Callahan score 30 goals in a season ? Twist it anyhow you like, this is a massive overpayment for a guy with a very limited ceiling.

Gaborik just re-upped with the Kings at 7 x 4.9 for comparison.

Too much cap but I'm sure Tampa needed to do this to justify the trade. I think that played a part.
