    # Browns rookie Joel Bitonio clearly has great shot to be immediate starter. Brass praising him & he lined up as first-team left guard today.
Should be no reason Joel outside of injury is not starting. FO and Farmer in particular are in love with this guy and after having a week and a half to really dig into him I am too.

Well good to hear for possibly never.

    Aditi Kinkhabwala ‏ @ AKinkhabwala 3s
Manziel throws with some serious zip. Can't match Hoyer's accuracy yet. Or understanding of WR routes. But hey it's May 21.
Well besides being injury prone apperantly already even though there is no fact of that from his college time it appears that JFF is already a bust. Trade him already.

    Steve Doerschuk ‏ @ sdoerschukREP 1m
Gordon getting full dose of practice. Might mean nothing more than tie-in to Haslam declaring he is in Browns' plan beyond '14.

    Steve Doerschuk ‏ @ sdoerschukREP 50s
Seen this from Gordon before. Looks like he's lolly-gagging to line. Boom. Goes to full alert.

    Steve Doerschuk ‏ @ sdoerschukREP 33s
Gordon definitely showing what Browns will miss, if he misses whatever. Easily the most conspicuous talent on field.

My only question is running game, I know who every other starter will be, but this is a crowded backfield which I love because its something we have lacked for some time we have 4 guys back there who could start. We will def be running the ball this season well if the holes are there so exciting. I really see a 11-5 season the (drive for 11-5) If Hoyer or Manzeil can manage the passing game.

I think our RB depth chart come week one is:

    Ben Tate
    Terrance West
    Isaiah Crowell

Ogs done well for us last year but is still more of a FB. Lewis is back and healthy, but for how long. I like his game but he is just to injury prone.

    Great updates Otto.

Don't blame Gordon for not talking to reporters. I would keep him far away for now. Could only imagine the questions he is going to be asked by CLE media when/if his suspension is announced.

Good to hear Hoyer embracing the competition. I would not mind Hoyer starting, and I hope he is able to beat out Manziel for the first year just so Manziel can learn. But if Manziel gives us the better chance at winning then I hope he is the starter.

Here are my superlatives from the first three weeks of Cleveland Browns’ OTA practices:

    Offensive MVPs

Jordan Cameron: He has been the most consistently dominant performer in each practice. The fourth-year tight end seems to have taken his game to a higher level than last season, when he made his first Pro Bowl. Cameron is showing a better understanding of coverages, which is helping him to find openings deeper downfield, and he looks to be an even more dangerous red-zone target.

Andrew Hawkins: He not only catches practically everything thrown his way, but he does an exceptional job from his slot-receiver position of finding openings underneath zone coverage that, because his tremendous speed and quickness, often are impossible for the defense to close. He has amazing acceleration that allows him to turn short and intermediate routes into big plays.

Terrance West: In most workouts, the rookie running back hasn’t looked like a rookie. He immediately established himself as a force during rookie camp, and has continued to do so while surrounded by veterans the past few weeks. He shows terrific speed and explosiveness, and is a natural fit for the Browns’ new zone-blocking scheme because of his patience that allows blockers to stretch the defense to create seams and his ability to plant his foot and quickly burst through the first opening he sees.

    Offensive surprises

Joel Bitonio: For a rookie, he has a veteran-like presence at guard. Anthony Armstrong: He shows impressive speed for a 31-year-old receiver and catches the ball well. MarQueis Gray: He’s establishing himself as the second-best pass-catching tight end on the team and can play fullback. Willie Snead: The undrafted free-agent receiver has consistently performed well. Edwin Baker: He might be a long-shot to keep a roster spot at a position that has been greatly upgraded with the additions of West and Ben Tate, but the guy does have a great deal of speed.

    Offensive sleeper

Isaiah Crowell: He made some eye-catching runs and moves during rookie minicamp before being sidelined with an injury. Depending on how/when he recovers, the rookie free agent will be someone to watch in training camp.

    Defensive MVPs

Billy Winn: He has been extremely active along the defensive line, making the most of his impressive combination of size, strength, and athleticism. He looks to be bigger and stronger than ever. He also seems to fit perfectly into a defensive scheme that emphasizes aggressive play up front.

Donte Whitner: There is no contact in these no-pads sessions, but it’s easy to see Whitner’s presence being felt as the hard-hitting safety he has been throughout his NFL career. He consistently is around the ball and has been in position on numerous occasions to deliver big blows. Despite recently joining the team as a free agent, he already has established himself as one of the primary defensive leaders.

Buster Skrine: His fierce competitiveness has been on display since the very first OTA practice. The veteran cornerback is determined to show that he is worthy of remaining a starter despite the presence of first-round pick Justin Gilbert. And has no intention of giving up playing time to Gilbert or fourth-rounder Pierre Desir or anyone else.

    Defensive surprises

Isaiah Trufant: He might be the smallest player on the team, but has impressed coaches by performing like a much larger athlete in coverage. Darius Eubanks: His pass coverage from his inside-linebacker position has been impressive; the guy always seems to be around the football. Jordan Poyer: He’s making a strong impression with his coverage and versatility in the defensive backfield. Leon McFadden: The second-year cornerback is making noticeable strides from his mostly disappointing rookie season. Josh Aubrey: He has made himself noticed with good, solid play in the defensive backfield.

    Defensive sleeper

Calvin Barnett: The undrafted rookie defensive lineman has had multiple practices that make you say, “What’s that guy’s number?” For the record, it’s 91.

Hawkins and Whitner already sound like they are drastically improving both sides of the ball. Love hearing about Whitner's leadership.

1.Josh Gordon was riding the bike, which is not ideal. Gordon missed Wednesday’s practice and will miss Thursday’s with what coach Mike Pettine called a “minor ding.” That’s all he would say about it, but Gordon’s absence was noticed. The receiving crew without Gordon is a rather ... well ... interesting ... that’s the word ... interesting group. If the Gordon suspension comes down -- the British got to the Falklands faster than this decision has been made -- it could be that the last two times Gordon was with the team for at least a year, he watched and did not practice.

2.It didn’t help that joining Gordon on the sideline were Nate Burleson and Miles Austin. Burleson is recovering from having the pin placed in his arm when he broke it last year refitted, and Austin is out for unknown reasons. Pettine even admitted that the uncertainty about Gordon’s status combined with the missing veterans “does put us a little bit behind with the uncertainty of what the lineup is going to look like.” He said the team is hoping to find a “diamond in the rough” among the gaggle of young receivers in camp, which would be a good thing but isn’t always encouraging.

3.There was a nasty fight late in practice with guard Garrett Gilkey and defensive tackle Phil Taylor the main participants. This was one serious fight, with Gilkey throwing at least three uppercuts and Taylor twice jumping over a group of players to take some serious and wild swings at Gilkey. At one point Taylor shoved Austin out of the way so he could restart the fracas. It took a few moments for coaches and players to break things up. “I talked to them about it afterward, that we’re all wearing the same logo,” Pettine said. “I always use the phrase competitive, not combative. That line gets crossed every now and again, but I also think that’s a byproduct of what we’re trying to build, the mentality. It happens. As a coach you frown on it, but as a coach you understand that might be the price of doing business.” Pettine admitted this one went too far. “Especially because Gilkey’s hair ... there might have been a hair pull or two at the end,” Pettine said. Gilkey summed things up this way after practice:

    Well that was fun. #GoBrowns

4.One player who has stood out to everyone is receiver Andrew Hawkins, who is getting a lot of work thanks to the absence of others. Hawkins is exceptionally quick and seems to have the drive to succeed. Brian Hoyer didn't talk Wednesday because he was not made available to the media, but he has said Hawkins attacks routes the same way Wes Welker does. Pettine said one defensive call had Hawkins double covered, but he got open and made the catch, which prompted offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to taunt defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil and say: “You have to put three on him.” Said Pettine: “[Hawkins] is a guy who can win in the slot.” The next step will be continuing to win while wearing pads.

5.Pettine’s father visited his son and spent part of the morning watching film of the team’s practice. Mike Pettine Sr. is a legendary high school coach in Pennsylvania, having had great success at Central Bucks High School. Evidently the elder Pettine can be blunt when breaking down tape. “We had a ... I wouldn’t call it heated ... we had an Italian conversation this morning before practice,” Pettine the younger said. “A lot of times I tell him it’s sometimes how you say, how you package it,” the Browns coach said. “Usually the content’s accurate. But sometimes my defenses go up when he delivers the message the way he delivers it.” Which would indicate that Pettine the son’s nickname -- Blunt Force Trauma -- did not fall far from the tree. “I learned from the best,” he said.

I've actually met Gilkey before and I will say he was probably one of the most BA guys I have been around. Very fiery and passionate. Needs to control at times it seems and also needs to really polish up his technique to work for the ZBS being installed but the kid really wants it. Could possibly beat out Greco or be a good depth option at Guard moving forward.

Hawk continues to get talked up. I remember hearing some of the same stuff about Bess last offseason though too so I will wait and see although I don't see Hawk posting Tweets or Instagrams with bongs so thats a plus. Seems to have his head on a good deal and if he can stay healthy might be a steal.
