Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Yankees (May 16-17)

Pittsburgh Pirates v. New York Yankees (5/16-18/14 Yankee Stadium)

    Game 1:

Edison Volquez (1-3, 4.36 ERA) vs. David Phelps (0-0, 4.09 ERA)

Edinson Volquez allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision versus St. Louis. Volquez has allowed 15 earned runs over his last 15 1/3 innings. There is more ugliness ahead.

David Phelps allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Sunday. Phelps was fortunate to escape with just four runs against, as the Brewers were on base all afternoon against the right-hander. He walked three to go with his eight hits allowed, striking out just one.

    Game 2:

Charlie Morton (0-5, 3.22 ERA) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 4.62 ERA)

Charlie Morton pitched well in a losing effort against the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings of work. While he's still winless on the season at 0-5, he sports a solid 3.22 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 31/17 K/BB ratio over his first 50 1/3 innings.

Hiroki Kuroda gave up four runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision against the Mets. Pretty typical from Kuroda these days. He's allowed four runs in half of his starts, and he's made it through seven innings just once. That's not to say he's been awful: he has a 36/7 K/BB ratio in 48 1/3 IP. But it doesn't seem like he's going to return to early-2013 form.

    Game 3:

Gerrit Cole (3-3, 3.76 ERA) vs. Vidal Nuno (1-1, 6.43 ERA)

Gerrit Cole allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers. Cole also walked three while striking out six. The right-hander has now allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his eight starts on the season, but he's just 3-3 to show for it. He's got a tough test Sunday in an interleague matchup with the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Vidal Nuno was torched for seven runs (five earned) in 3 1/3 innings as the Yankees lost to the Mets on Tuesday.

Seems like the sky is falling in Pittsburgh too. Here's a somewhat humorous take (expletives deleted) on the upcoming series from a Pirates blogger:

I hate the Yankees. I hate them for the reasons you do. I hate that weíre gonna have to suffer through this series. I hate, in advance, hearing everyone ***** and moan about the payroll.

Iím not looking forward to this series. After yesterday Iím not looking forward to laying eyes on a Pittsburgh Pirate in general.

Mercifully the Pirates havenít played the Yankees since 2008. They were 2-1, with all three games at PNC Park.

The last time they played the Yankees in New York was waaaaaaay back in 2007. They were swept. They were outscored 27 Ė 13. Your losing pitchers? Matt Capps, Paul Maholm, Shawn Chacon. Chacon had a particularly bad outing. Anyway. Enough about the great Shawn Chacon.

The Pirates will trot out an equally not good pitcher in Edinson Volquez.

Baseball Reference does a neat thing where they give pitchers a ďsimilarity scoreĒ. Itís a cool way to compare a pitcher to another pitcher in history. Edinson Volquez is most similar to another Pirate great, Tony Armas. Volquez is currently suffering from Charlie Morton Syndrome. He canít ******* get lefties out to save his life.

That seems like a recipe success with Brian McCann, Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson, Yangervis Solarte, Mark Teixeira, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, and Ichiro Suzuki all left-handed options.

At least we wonít have to see that ****** Carlos Beltran.

Iím not 100% sure this is true but David Phelps is the son of legendary pastor Fred Phelps. Donít quote me on that. That may or may not be true. Phelps is a stinky reliever/starter type thing that the Pirates have seemed to struggle with so far. Heís never faced the Pirates. Heís an enigma wrapped in a mystery. He should apparently stick to relieving.

I bet Chris Stewart is going to give up ALL the info on Phelps. Thatís why the Pirates acquired him I bet!

Volquez is pretty bad. I hope they don't skip him.

Polanco is torching AAA but the Pirates are keeping him down. Should see him in June.

I don't like how we have been postponing games hours earlier before it's even close to the start time.

    Here's today's ex-Yankee report:

Kyle Farnsworth - DFA by Mets

Justin Maxwell - DFA by Royals

Jayson Nix - signed by Tampa

    Zach McAllister - pitched a gem - 1.1 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 8 ER

Nick Swisher - hit a HR

The O's are signing Heath Bell too.

Old fashioned double header, one right after the other so probably 1pm and 4pm.
