Cincinnati Reds @ Atlanta Braves
Friday, 4/25 7:35 PM
Homer Bailey, RHP (1-1, 5.75 ERA/5.73 FIP/3.08 xFIP)vs Ervin Santana, RHP (2-0, 0.86 ERA/1.93 FIP/2.08 xFIP)
Following three poor starts to begin the season, Bailey turned in his first strong outing and was rewarded with plenty of help for an 8-2 win over the Cubs on Sunday. He worked six scoreless innings while scattering six hits and striking out eight.
Santana has proven to be the solid addition the Braves envisioned when they signed him in March to replenish their injury-depleted rotation. His early success has been aided by the confidence he has regained in his changeup.
Saturday, 4/26 7:10 PM
Mike Leake, RHP (2-1, 3.49 ERA/4.12 FIP/3.64 xFIP)vs David Hale, RHP (0-0, 2.93 ERA/3.35 FIP/4.66 xFIP)
Leake allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk in seven innings Monday against the Pirates. His outing was marred by one ill-fated pitch to Ike Davis, who belted a grand slam in the fourth inning.
Hale might have earned himself one more big league start with the determination he showed during Sunday's six-inning effort in New York. Two of the three runs he surrendered came as a direct result of defensive miscues.
Sunday, 4/27 1:35 PM
Johnny Cueto, RHP (2-2, 1.38 ERA/3.21 FIP/2.80 xFIP)vs Julio Teheran, RHP (2-1, 1.80 ERA/3.63 FIP/4.08 xFIP)
Cueto is on a roll with back-to-back complete games in two starts vs. the Pirates. His 21-inning scoreless streak ended Tuesday. He is the first Reds pitcher since Tom Browning in April 1994 to hurl consecutive complete games of three hits or fewer.
Teheran has spent this season's first month legitimizing his bid to become an ace. Still, he could prove to be even better as warmer temperatures provide an opportunity to gain a more consistent feel for his nasty slider.
