Ruggiano to the DL, Parker Down, Rosscup/Ramirez Up

    Some bullpen shuffling.

@CarrieMuskat: #Cubs moves Ruggiano to DL. Parker optioned to Iowa. Rosscup and Neil Ramirez recalled
Excited to see Ramirez, love Rosscup. Wonder how long they keep 13 pitchers; I imagine Watkins or Valaika come up at some point.
    Thanks JO-MO

Why not Russell! Get rid of him he's done. Any way looking forward to seeing Ramirez. Rosscup should have made the team out of ST.

Big blow to the team's chances losing their key offseason acquisition.

Because he's been too good in recent years to just dump him. I realize Russell has been less than stellar (putting it lightly with kid gloves) but he's at least earned the right to work out of his funk in the majors because he has shown to be a reliable arm over the last few.

He had one good year in 2012. He wasn't very good last year. I've never liked him. He hasn't earned anything. I don't like the idea of "earning" a right to work out of a funk. If you're not performing, the next in line should be getting his opportunity. This isn't the minors, this is the big boy league. (This might sound condescending toward you but it is not meant to be)

In that case, you felt that Rizzo and Castro should've been benched most of last year, if not sent down. As well as Schierholz this year, along with everyone not named Rizzo, Castro or Castillo this year?

You may not feel he was very good last year (and he wasn't elite) but he was a solid RP last year. I'm not sure how you can think 2012 was good but not 2013, they're not far off statistically. He gave up a higher HR rate last year but he was also more difficult to reach base against-which is exactly what you want.

You hang on to Russell right now, he's not the reason the pen is faltering.

Why Watkins? They just lost half of an OF platoon that Vitters would slide right into. Let him get his confidence against LH pitching before testing him in a more full time role later in the season.

Oh come on RWB, those are completely different cases and you know it.

You may not feel he was very good last year (and he wasn't elite) but he was a solid RP last year. I'm not sure how you can think 2012 was good but not 2013, they're not far off statistically. This is a little more subjective. I haven't liked him since he came up. I don't like the fact that he has a mediocre fastball and can't seem to command it well (i'll admit this is more eye test than stats), and I was always expecting him to regress as the years went by which he has proven.

I agree. I never said he was. There is also Strop, who i think is being misused at this moment due to his command issues, Wright (been alright lately), Parker (who just got optioned) and Veras. He's a part of the problem though. Right now, we have two bullpen arms we can count on: Rondon and Grimm (Grimm does have his own weaknesses right now though, but he's getting outs).

My disdain for Russell this year stems from the fact that I think we have a better internal option in Rosscup, who deserves a shot (and he's getting it now) and the fact that when Russell comes out, he just looks completely off every time. DFA him, have a phantom injury so he can go work out some kinks, just don't put him in ball games right now.

YAY more Rosscup! Hopefully he's the first left handed option out of the pen with a lead.

    Interested in watching Ramirez too.

Castro is. Rizzo not quite as much with his limited ML success. And you're the one who said it's not the minors, it's the big boy league. As well as saying no one earns the right to work through a funk.

Mediocre fastballs and LHP go hand in hand a large percentage of the time.

The biggest problem with the pen is Veras. His utter failure has shifted so many people into other spots, not to mention he's basically shortened their pen everyday by just not being available for whatever reason. If Veras settled into that closer spot, Strop could settle back into the 8th (along with Rondon/Grimm whoever necessary) and they LHP's could slide back into being specialists. My biggest issue with Russell right now is his apparent inability to get a LHH out this year.

You can't just send everyone down.

And Russel wasn't really much worse in 2013 than 2012. I realize his FIP and xFIP were worse, but SIERA (a personal favorite of mine) suggests the difference between him was less negligible than that. His K/9 was only slightly lower, bis BB.9 was just about the same, and he gave up less LD's. Russel has had two quality years running. He's not a godsend but he's a quality arm and has earned his ability to work through it for a bit.

We're talking about a weak 5.2 IP. If everyone got sent down after 5.2 IP that were bad, Cliff Lee would have been sent to the minor leagues after 1 start.

Listen, Russel isn't amazing. Never really has been. But he's a quality arm who deserves a bit more time than just 5 innings.

Ruggiano to the DL, Parker Down, Rosscup/Ramirez Up

Is Neil Ramirez the new closer maybe?
