Kelly showed some rust after a 13-day layoff, though he worked around trouble to allow one run in his 2014 debut. His curveball was sharp, but command of his sinker and changeup lacked. Both pitches should come around with the return of routine.

Samardzija had his second quality start in as many games in his last outing against the Phillies, striking out eight in seven innings, but took the loss. His plan was to be aggressive early, and then mix in more of his secondary pitches. It worked.

Wainwright pitched well in a loss Sunday, hurt by two two-out doubles. He's already walked six after issuing only 34 free passes in 2013. Wainwright is still trying to find the feel for his cutter, but he doesn't believe he's far from getting it.

Villanueva took two losses in relief in the Cubs' opening series against the Pirates, but he bounced back in his first start, giving up one run over five frames vs. the Phillies.

Wacha opened the year with two starts against the Reds, who have yet to solve him. Though his final line was impressive, Wacha labored through an 82-pitch effort Monday. The leadoff hitter reached against him four times in six innings.

Jackson left too many pitches up in the first inning of his last outing, against the Pirates, and they batted around, scoring four runs. He did not get a decision, but also did not go deep in the game, lasting 4 2/3 innings.

    Jason Motte
April 8 - ST. LOUIS -- Reliever Jason Motte threw 19 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday, representing the latest step forward in his rehab process.
Motte, via text, said he recorded four or five outs and added that he "felt good. Good effort. Went well." Now 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery, Motte has been throwing simulated games about every third day for three weeks now. He said he is scheduled to pitch again on Friday, after making a quick trip to St. Louis to participate in a charity event on Thursday.
The Cardinals have not announced when Motte will transition from pitching in simulated or extended spring training games to facing hitters at higher Minor League levels on a rehab assignment. Motte is on track to return to the Cardinals' bullpen in May.
"We're just happy that every time he goes out there," manager Mike Matheny said, "the next day he says he feels great."

    Mark Ellis
Apr 4 - PITTSBURGH -- Manager Mike Matheny indicated on Friday that Mark Ellis, who began the season on the disabled list with left knee patella tendinitis, will likely begin a Minor League rehab assignment after the Cardinals' home-opener festivities.
Ellis has not resumed hitting, but he is "throwing and fielding pretty well," Matheny said. The second baseman is eligible to come off the disabled list on April 11, though the Cardinals have not yet publically projected whether they expect him to return on that date.

    Jaime Garcia
Feb 28 - JUPITER, Fla. -- After seeking opinions on his ailing shoulder from a pair of physicians, Jaime Garcia returned to Cardinals camp on Friday relieved to know that no structural damage was found, but also willing to be patient in making a return to the mound.
Garcia said he plans to wait another 10-15 days before resuming a throwing program. That delay ensures that Garcia will not be ready to open the season on the active roster. With being ready for Opening Day no longer a possibility, Garcia simply hopes that this is the last hurdle he will have to clear in his return from shoulder surgery.
Doctors have since diagnosed Garcia with bursitis, which is the swelling of the fluid-filled sac between the muscles, tendons and joints in his shoulder.

Watching paint dry could quite possibly be more exciting than seeing this team hit.

I'm currently unable to watch this game, so I'm watching on gameday. Is the strike zone really terrible today or is the gameday pitch tracker being run by monkeys today?

Pretty dumb move in my opinion. I go for the win there. Even if its still Kozma batting. Shows how much faith he has in kozma & bullpen. He makes some weird moves a lot.

Ehhh, I was fine with the move, I think having Rosenthal go another inning is the right play, but it didn't work out.

I hope Craig turns it around soon, he's a big part of our offense
