Tigers and Miguel Cabrera agree to mega-extension

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera are closing in on a "mega extension."
Good. Need to keep Miggy here for the rest of his career

Miguel Cabrera and tigers close to finalizing big extension, still needs physical.
    Sounds like any minute now.

Pretty much agreed Zander. He's earned every single penny he'll get.

Also like getting it "out of the way" before the season starts.

    Even if it's 10 years $350M?

I love the big man, but he's 31 in a few weeks and hopefully his body holds up long enough to play damn near 40, but what if we're still paying him $35M per?

I guess if we win a couple titles in the process it'll be worth it.

Hey, every contract thread needs "that guy"

Well that would be covered in blank check and lifetime contract, so....duh.
It'll be chump change when it comes TV contract time anyway.

Cabrera deal is now agreed to. thought to be 7 years plus. #tigers going on @MLBNetwork now
    Tiger for life!

Cabrera just needs to pass a physical in order for the deal to become official. The six-year extension will be added to the end of the two years remaining on his current contract, so he's now under control for the next eight years. He's expected to receive in the vicinity of $30 million per season with the extension. The soon-to-be 31-year-old Cabrera is coming off back-to-back AL MVP seasons.

Miguel Cabrera's new deal with #tigers will be for 10 years and just under $300M, says a baseball source.
So the years and $$ might be over done but for the Tigers this deal needed to happen. He is the face of our franchise and whatever it takes to keep him here so be it. Realistically this team doesn't have a lot of time left in the championship hunt anyway so might as well go balls out and keep your best player in the uni for a long time.

It's totally worth it if the team has no problem with paying the money.

to reference your comment about championship windows...It's not really true that our window is closing..it just looks like the window for this group of players is closing..

Okay enough about that Miggy is a Tiger for LIFE!!! that makes me very happy. Even though he was traded to us, I still like to think of him has a Detroit Tiger Native. He's the best hitter in baseball..and if you look it it, he's only getting a 30% raise in yearly income...haha.

His contract will pale in comparison to the next "Big one" whoever that is...Ahem Trout.

Exactly!!! Okay...sorry for triple posting, I'm just excited..

Actually...I was almost pissed. STORY TIME: I just got home from work, flipped on ESPN. Only thing I see on the bottom line is BREAKING NEWS: "Cabrera has numbers no other player than Albert Pujols has...something or other"

Now, When I see breaking news, I generally assume it is BAD. First thing that came to my head was that he was caught with steriods!! I was freaking out for like 10 seconds before I realized it was just an extension.

If he doesn't get at least double what Cabby got, something is wrong and DD should be fired on the spot.

This was Mike Illitch's last gift to the city of Detroit. The man's life is coming to an end and he can't take his money with him.

Thanks Mike. You're the best owner in baseball and one of the most respected man in all of sports.

The realist in me know that this extension is a huge mistake. We will be lucky to get 5 years of good production. The fan in me is so happy I get to watch my favorite player I've ever seen play baseball in a Tiger uniform for the rest of his career.
