Rangers claimed INF Donnie Murphy off waivers from the Cubs.
Murphy, 31, hit .255/.318/.530 with 11 home runs in 163 plate appearances with the Cubs last season. He'll give the Rangers another option at second base as they attempt to get by without Jurickson Profar. As for the Cubs, it appears likely that Mike Olt will make the Opening Day roster.

    Donnie ****ing Murphy!
To some, he was just a boy. A boy who played football, a football player that grew to be a man. A man that took over a city, a city that he made his own, a city that stands behind him in hopes of becoming one of that cities all-time greats. To some, 2013 was a fluke. To some, he can't do it again. To some, he got lucky.

To us though, to the Philly faithful, that QB is Nick Foles. To us, that's our QB.

Nobody even claimed Kottaras. Gotta be something up with him if not one team was willing to take on his salary.

Not a trade, it was a waiver claim
    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/rangers-acquire-donnie-murphy-from-cubs.html

12:24pm: The transaction was actually a waiver claim by Texas, reports MLB.com's Carrie Muskat (on Twitter). The Rangers will take on Murphy's $825K salary. Meanwhile, for the Cubs, prospect Mike Olt, who was acquired from Texas last year, could be headed for an Opening Day gig.

12:16pm: The Rangers have acquired infielder Donnie Murphy from the Cubs, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (via Twitter). Presumably, Murphy will serve as the fill-in for Jurickson Profar while he rehabs.

Murphy, 31, saw the most extensive action of his career last season, posting a surprising .255/.319/.530 line in 163 plate appearances. Over parts of eight years in the bigs, Murphy has accumulated a .215/.280/.405 line in 803 trips to the plate.

Yeah sorry, initial headline on BN said it was a trade. Title can be changed.

Agreed on Kottaras. I think Baker is fine as a backup C, but no one picking up Kottaras is strange.

A nice way to close my favorite ST storyline. Thought some of the "omg is it going to be Barney or Murphy?!?!" convos were just hilarious. I get that people are utterly convinced that Barney sucks but it really should be easy to acknowledge that he is a more valuable player than Murphy.

i think he would have been worth the salary dump and getting a nice class A arm back! Only bcause you could drop Murphy at any time when Baez is brought up.

Some of you are being a little hard on Murph. He's got some nice versatility and was one of the few bright spots on offense last season. The patchwork of him, Ransom and Valbuena actually produced pretty decent production at 3rd base last season. Good pick up by the Rangers.

In the end he is a 30+ old utility infielder with little to no upside. Cubs were not going to get offers when the other teams know if he doesnt win a spot on our 25 man roster he will have to go thru waivers...
