A Marshall extension would explain a lot. Take $4M from Cutler's current cap figure and shift all of it to a Marshall extension as a 2014 roster bonus. The net effect would be 1) $0 on the current salary cap, 2) an extra $1M guaranteed to Cutler the next four years ($2M future dead money at most), and 3) a potentially cheaper front loaded contract extension to Marshall.

Shifting around the money between Cutler and Marshall would have little net effect on the current and future caps and Marshall might accept a cheaper overall extension if more money is guaranteed upfront. Don't know if we'll see it come to fruition, but it would make sense to me and could explain a lot.

Also, all $4M might not be shifted as the Bears may really need to retain $1-2M for the final roster and in-season movement.
Seems to purely be done to minimize dead money later

I don't follow. Converting current salary to signing bonus always increases potential dead money, it never minimizes it.

I don't think Eric Weems was ever officially cut. That's another 1.1MM of cap space.

Makes no sense to me to cut Bennett, ask Weems for a pay cut and restructure Cutler's deal just to have money in case.

Whoever has insider, I'm curious to see where they ranked the Bears.

I thought about roll over cash too but wouldn't the Bears already have a shitload of money to spend next off-season without the roll over? And couldn't the Bears have used the automatic conversion clause next season if they wanted more money to play with?

The conversion moves it over the next five years, next year four. If we did the same thing next year, we'd push more guaranteed money into the following seasons on Jay's contract.

We already are scheduled to have a lot of money without the rollover, but having more doesn't hurt with the cap increases. We are gonna have to out bid a lot of teams, especially those that are trying to keep their respective FAs around. My guess is it's a combination of that and post-draft cuts. Some quality players are likely to hit the market at that time.
