    Astros offered George Springer a 7/23 deal....and he's still just a prospect

Springer turned it down. But it would have covered all 6 seasons, and his first year of free agency.

But it also would have earned him an OD call-up...but now the Astros will probably attempt to delay his free agency another year by waiting to call him up.

Really impressed by the Astros attempts here. Maybe they can still work something out though.

Springer is gonna be a beast though.

Astros have some good specs. Can't wait to see how these guys turn out.

7/28ish though, I feel would be fair to Springer.

    From 2014-2020.....give him:

    2014: 500K and a call-up on OD
    2015: 750K
    2016: 1.25M
    2017: 3M
2018: 5M (otherwise, his first year of arb)
    2019: 7M
    2020: 10M

That's plenty fair, and it gets him called up, and he's a free agent when he would have been a free agent any way.

I bet Springer has a brighter career....even though Taveras is younger and has some better tools. I really like the way Springer looks

Had the same debate with some friends.

Springer has Beltran type skills although the K rate is worrisome. Taveras on the other hand I felt like was a safer bet to max his talents one way or another.

    Correra/Springer could be very special.

I hope he isn't punished for not signing a deal, what if he would rather do, a 6 year contract and get a call up he deserves.

    Not offered?

Why would the Astros offer a 6 year deal? What's their benefit?

Do you know it wasn't on the table.
Knowing exactly what you will be paying him through arbitration seems like a pretty good benefit.

If your so supportive of Trout going year to year, what's so different with Springer doing the same?

Cost certainty. Although something like 6 years/$20 million with a few $10-15 million per year options might be reasonable for both parties.

Cost certainty isn't enough reason to potentially overpay a player.

The only reason you give a player a guaranteed deal well before you have to is so you can potentially save money on him in a free agent year(s).

I just don't see why Springer wouldn't do this, unless they are just way off on the dollar amount. 7 years isn't him sacrificing any free agent years (but possibly one, and he doesn't have that year any way).

Because Trout has already finished two MLB seasons at a historic pace.

Springer hasn't even reached the big leagues, and is seven seasons from being a free agent.

Trout is 4 years away, and is 1 year away from getting a huge paycheck any way, Springer is four years from getting that same paycheck....and that's IF he plays well and doesn't get hurt.

    Very different scenarios.
