Vikings resign Everson Griffen for 5 years

@Andrew_Krammer: RT @RapSheet DE Everson Griffen is re-signing with the Vikings on a huge 5-year deal, per source

    More details to come.

I cant wait to stand on the podium with Zygi and Mark and Jonathan, and were standing on the podium, and we look up and the confetti is falling down on top of us, and were all hand in hand, and Commissioner Goodell comes over and hands the Super Bowl trophy to Mr. Wilf and tells him hes world champion, that is my goal and that is my drive.

Everson Griffen - DL - Vikings
    Mar 9 - 1:25 PM

Vikings re-signed RE Everson Griffen to a five-year contract.

It's a big get for GM Rick Spielman, whose defensive line has underwhelmed and crumbled almost entirely in 2013. DTs Kevin Williams and Fred Evans are free agents, NT Letroy Guion was released, and RE Jared Allen isn't coming back. Griffen has been "blocked" by Allen and LE Brian Robison the past several seasons, but still managed 13.5 sacks over the last two in a clear-cut reserve role, and just turned 26 in December. He's a high-ceiling prospect with 2014 breakout potential in IDP leagues. Look for Griffen to take over as Minnesota's every-down right defensive end.

Ben Goessling tweeted that the Vikings could still pursue Michael Johnson and move Everson Griffen around

@AdamSchefter: Vikings re-signed DE Everson Griffin, as @rapsheet reported. Told it's a 5-year, $42.5 million deal that includes $20 mil gtd, per source.

Yea I can't see Michael Johnson signing here now. We did carry Jared Allen and his 17 million cap hit but if we signed Johnson the cap hit would be over 17. Hopefully Griffen can step up and play to his potential.

His 8.5 per year salary puts him in the top 10 for defensive ends.

Glad we got Griffen back. Looking forward to seeing him as an every down player. We need to get a Cb and a NT

Hopefully this 'take a chance on a players potential' deal works out better than Carlson's did. I'm sure Spielman made the contract team-friendly after a year or two so they could make it easier if it wasnt working out.

Having said that, love having him back. This deal isn't as HUGE as Shields deal. I'm glad about that.

I'm glad he's back but this is risky. Hopefully Spielman made this deal team friendly. Griffen played over 50% of his snaps last season as a nickel DT so this will be a bit of a change for him starting full time. I really hope this pays off.

too bad they couldn't have gotten this done before/during the season, it would have been at least a little cheaper........still, while the total seems a shade high, I haven't seen the per year breakdown.........either way, good checkmark to have in place

that'd still leave 15.5 over the last 2, tho at least it tapers some instead of escalating
