Devin Hester won’t play for the Bears next season.
Perhaps the game’s greatest kick returner of all time acknowledged Wednesday night what signs had pointed to all offseason.
“From my knowledge,” he said on NFL Network, “I know Chicago wants to go a different route with me.”
That means letting Hester reach unrestricted free agency Tuesday, and then watching him sign with another team.
Wednesday night, Hester reiterated his desire to return and retire as a member of the Bears, whenever his career ends.
“All I can say is, ‘Thanks to the fans and the support,’” he said; “Always been great to me, always been loyal. Couldn’t want to play for a better city than those guys.”
