Sandy: 90 wins for the mets

    http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/b...rk&src=desktop

    • Sandy Alderson told staffers in an internal meeting that the Mets can win 90 games in 2014, columnist John Harper reports in the Daily News. Writes Harper:

    Yes, 90.

And, according to people who were in the room, after Alderson’s decree prompted discussion about how to best maximize the Mets’ assets, owner Fred Wilpon chimed in at one point with his own pointed assessment.

“We better win 90,” he said, according to a source.

What, Matt Harvey’s elbow surgery was just a cruel practical joke of some kind, and he’s secretly preparing for Opening Day?

Otherwise the idea sounds preposterous, right? A Las Vegas sports book, Bovada, on Wednesday released its over/under proposition bets, and it put the number for the Mets at 73.5.

Sandy: 90 wins for the mets

I rather hear this than strive for mediocrity.

But if this team can't win 90, then the blame falls on the GM.

Yes, sounds like Freddie is tired of this 'rebuild'. So am I. It is 2014, there are players out there who can improve this team.

    It can't and it will.

FoC thinks Sandy is FoS here. He's starting ST with completely unacceptable options at one-fourth of his non-pitcher positions. It recalls a time in the mid 90s when we went into the season thinking Bill Pecota was an acceptable option at third base.

This isn't even a decent team and yet our GM (and other posters in here, truth be told) would have us believe that 90 wins is a possibility.

    Oy.

His voice lacks the range of tonal color necessary to make it consistently interesting. Full time consideration of another endeavor might be in order."

We're too attuned to accepting mediocre options.

I'm one of those posters you mention. This team can win 90 games, but only if Ike hits like he did in the second half of 2012, d'Arnaud performs up to full expectations and doesn't get hurt, Lagares turns into a major league bat, and we have a decent SS.

Those are a lot of if's. Which is why Sandy's statement was true, but unlikely.

Sandy is a very smart man who always chooses his words carefully. He never said this is a 90 win team. He said this team "can win 90 games."

Since everyone just laughed off his comment or called him a fool, no one actually asked him to qualify that statement. Who are the real fools?

    The C of B!!!!!

I wanna see a new signature and a new avatar before I will even believe you're committed to starting the C of B. Other than that, you're just so much talk, just like Sandy!

l remember last year. We lost so many close games, in such stupid ridiculous ways. Especially at the beginning of the season. With the improved bullpen being there the whole season, and some added bats, much improved outfield defense..l think that should be a big boost

lf Sandy ads a shortstop, l think wins around mid eighties is very possible.

    Yeah.

I can also win the Powerball or the Mega Millions.

You're a fool to say I can't, especially since i only said I can, not that I will.

Now that we've left the Wonderful World of Semantics (WWS), I'm actually quite optimistic about d'Arnaud and Legares, and I'd even like to see den Dekker thrown into the mix.

Where we part company is Ike. I'm done thinking he's even a major leaguer.

But I've been wrong before, as have you. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Let me be the first to say…If you start it, I will come. Or something like that.

I’ve already gone on record as saying 84-78, so I don’t think 90 is that outlandish. Kind of unlikely? Yes. The craziest thing we have ever heard? Not even close. I believe in this team. And more than any other player(s), I think people will be eating their words about both Ike and Chris Young.

    .
    Time will tell.

I'm with you on den Dekker. I am one of the few who thinks the Mets open the season with a Lagares/den Dekker platoon. Collins loves den Dekker's defense, and I think there is an open competition in ST for CF.

    So what?

The team can win 90 games. A LOT has to break right.

    It's a pep talk.
"The 90 wins is about challenge. It's about changing the conversation. It's about framing questions for ourselves as to how we get there. So I stand by the notion that we need to get better, and in doing so we need to set concrete goals for ourselves so that we have sort of specific conversations among ourselves about how we're going to get there." -- Mr. Alderson

I think he and Lagares would make for a great platoon, something that would help keep them fresh into the hotter months of the season as well as help the team better sustain an injury in the outfield.
