Jim Harbaugh's relationship with 49ers brass is getting worse

INDIANAPOLIS -- Things are not getting better behind the scenes for the San Francisco 49ers. There was a persistent rumble throughout the combine about the extent of the rift between coach Jim Harbaugh and the team's front office. It doesn't seem like it will go away, and there is increasing buzz that the team might have to decide between Harbaugh or GM Trent Baalke.

The men are barely speaking, I'm told, and almost all communication is through email. Harbaugh also has a strained relationship with team president Paraag Marathe, sources said, and he has clashed with many within the organization. It could prove untenable. If anything, the impression I got this week was that the situation there is actually much worse than how it has been portrayed in the media, and helps explain the delay in giving a new deal to the coach, who has two years left on a contract he has outperformed.

Harbaugh has done nothing but reach, at least, the NFC championship game since coming to San Francisco three years ago, and the longer this goes on, the worse it might get. To almost anyone I posited the question to, the response was pretty much the same -- there is no way they can't extend Harbaugh. But then again, in the NFL, you never know.

I've long expected Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to attempt to trade for Harbaugh, and we all know he already tried to hire him before firing a coach in the past. I'm also not surprised that the Browns made an attempt to land him as well, although, from what I have heard of that situation, Cleveland's approach did not get very far. Still, if other teams sense a vulnerability there, they will continue to explore, and it's hard to imagine Harbaugh coaching out a lame-duck year there in 2015 if he hasn't received an extension by then.

This is a matter that will need attention this offseason, one way or the other. When the 49ers landed Harbaugh, his intensity, personality, potential issues getting along with others, etc., were no secret. Some wondered how long it might be before issues arose, with Baalke also very intense and strong-willed himself. If they did in some way move on from him -- via a trade or whatever -- many believe defensive line coach Jim Tomsula would be positioned to slide in.

Perhaps owner Jed York can find a way to make this situation work long term and retain the many talented people he has assembled. He has proven to be a dynamic leader and a problem solver already.

They both have personalities that wear on people and both want to be the head honcho. As long as they work together well I don't care if they like each other.

Clearly elevated things with the Browns rumor. Hard to say what's going on when we don't know the truth about what really went down.

Baalke is probably on him concerning the passing game.

Ya, Kap needs to somehow go through progressions on a consistent basis while maintaining the run threat. He should be working with a QB coach as we speak. Sunday night at 9 pm. I would imagine ownership/management is a little frustrated with the SB loss - 3 passes in a row to Crabtree in the corner of the endzone, then this seasons so so season by Kap to be ended with a pass to Crabtree at the corner of the endzone.

I wont be surprised if we go after a good pass blocking O lineman in the second round but Jim, or someone, needs to be working on Kaps game. What I've noticed, which should be obvious, is his explosive running production absolutely depends on him not sticking around in the pocket. When they tried to reel in his running Kap didn't do so well but we also only had Boldin as a viable WR.

I'm hoping they work with Kap in the offseason and get to the point where Kap can "turn off" the instinct to run and subsequently hang out in the pocket longer going through progressions. Then go into his college game mode if need be. The first few games in 2014 will be where I judge his progression as a passer. If he puts up numbers like he did in week 2,3,5,10 and 11 (2013) we're going to have problems but I dont see that happening.

Our 2014 season wholly relies on Kaepernick's progress as a pocket passer, as does Harbaugh's future in SF. That's the way I see it. If we fall short of the playoffs or are eliminated in the first round due to a lack off passing game production both Harbaugh and Kap might be gone BUT it's not like our running game helped out in Seattle. Bottom line is we need to be able to get into the endzone and rely less on our D shutting opponents down.

I don't see Harbaugh anywhere near the chopping block in that scenario. That would be on Kap. Still think They're going to sign him long term soon. Mistake if they don't.

Ya, it would be a mistake, I'm just trying to figure out the main source of tension between Baalke/Harbaugh. Also, if we dont get a ring within the next two seasons I'm not sure how long we could keep this D going after that.

    Must. win. big. now.

The issue between them is they both have the alpha male type personality that has a genetic need to be "the guy in charge", having two guys like that as a HC and GM is going to cause friction. As long as it doesn't impact the team I could care less if they fight every other Wednesday in a steel cage lol.

That's the concern. This can only go on for so long before it starts to impact the team
