Orioles Nearing Deal With Nelson Cruz

    Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 4m
sources: #orioles closing in on a deal for nelson cruz

Free agent slugger Nelson Cruz is close to a deal with the Orioles, according to people familiar with the deal.

The Cruz signing, once finalized, will be the second major signing in two days for Baltimore, which is obviously going for it now. The Orioles' lineup looks like one of the better ones in baseball now.

Wow that's a really good lineup, something like:

    Nick Markakis
    Manny Machado
    Adam Jones
    Chris Davis
    Nelson Cruz
    Matt Wieters
    J.J. Hardy
    Delmon Young
    Jemile Weeks
    Carlos Beltran 2014 Stats:
    33 Games | .307 wOBA | .240 BABIP | 5 HRs | 14 Runs | 15 RBIs

If they go get Kendrys Morales, the O's are arguably the most balanced team in the league. key words being IF and ARGUABLY

I doubt they sign both unless they think Cruz can play the OF. I still don't get why they didn't go after another closer after not signing Balfour.

They'd be a solid team, but I certainly wouldn't argue they're more balanced than Texas, Detroit, Boston or Tampa to name a few.

I posted this in another thread on Jan 28th. This wasn't too hard to figure out.......

"Great article!! For years I've told my friends that LaRussa was involved in either hooking guys up, or looking the other way. And I would bet anything that it didn't change anything when he went to Stl. And numbers show that it was pretty obvious...at least to me. Since LaRussa left, I really can't be as positive as I was about the Cards.

I think there's about 5 pretty obvious teams that either provide PED's, encourage it, or look the other way.

    Balt
    Yanks
    Bos
    Stl
    Tor

It's my opinion that Nelson Cruz will sign with one of these teams. Again, my opinion."

I'm really surprised he signed for so cheap.

Good for the O's, Cruz looks pretty silly now

agreed. I get the PED thing and compensation issue for him but that salary seems too low still

No offense but would it really matter? Would it make them legitimate WS contenders?

Good chance this guy was using PEDs his entire MLB career. Watch his stats fall in 2014--unless he found a new supplier.

Not if teams are suspicious whether he can be productive w/o steroids.
"The 90 wins is about challenge. It's about changing the conversation. It's about framing questions for ourselves as to how we get there. So I stand by the notion that we need to get better, and in doing so we need to set concrete goals for ourselves so that we have sort of specific conversations among ourselves about how we're going to get there." -- Mr. Alderson
