The White Sox and pitcher Jose Quintana do not plan to discuss an extension during spring training, Cotillo tweets. Quintana, 25, posted a 3.51 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 200 innings in 2013. He will likely be eligible for arbitration next offseason as a Super Two player.
I just think with Quintana's easy throwing motion and his improvement from '12-'13, it would be smart to lock him up, but in all reality I don't think waiting another year will cost that much money. It may just be around that same deal that Sale got if he takes another step forward.
I think 6yr/$32.5M w/ an option year is fair this offseason and next year it may just be 5yr/$32M w/ 1 or 2 option years. Quintana is really taking the risk by not signing because nothing is guaranteed moving forward.
He just seems to be getting stronger the longer he is with the Sox.
