    Cubs sign Jason Hammel

    Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 16m
Sources: #Cubs in agreement with free-agent RHP Jason Hammel, pending a physical.

    roto blurb

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs have come to terms on a contract with Jason Hammel.

The particulars of the deal aren't yet available, but it will be made official once he passes a physical. Hammel posted a disappointing 4.97 ERA over 139 1/3 innings last season but could be a sneaky addition if he can rebound to his 2012 form, when he held a 3.43 mark while striking out nearly a batter per inning.
props to Marlin for calling it.

I mean I like the signing I guess. Not exciting. Another Feldman/Mahlom type. Hope he has good first half then flip him

More trade fodder when the deadline comes, thats if he pitches like his 2012 self. Let's hope the arm inflammation from last year was nothing serious.

Curious to see how much money we gave him. Pretty minimal risk here and if he has a bounce back first half he could be flipped for a Feldman-like package.

It is what it is. The Cubs needed a starter and didn't want to break the bank on anybody not named Tanaka.

Meh. Low risk/medium reward. If what he said was true and he couldn't get comfortable extension in his throwing motion/comfortably throw his slider then maybe he comes out and pitches a healthy first half this year. It apparently bothered him since last Spring.

Expecting 4.00 ERA with an equal chance of injury/bust to throwing a solid sub-4 first half. If the latter, he'd be a good sell with the "He's healthy again, like he was 2012 in the AL East with that 3-5 ERA and 9 k/9."

There is nothing sexy about this signing but it is what we expected. Hopefully Hammel can stay healthy and Bosio can work with him. I would also like them to try and bring back Maholm as a swing man/spot starter/trade chip.

I'm intrigued, mainly just because he throws hard. I'm also pissed he's not Masahiro Tanaka, so there is that as well.

Also makes sense if you're Hammel. Low pressure environment for a show-me situation that either gets you back on a contending team mid-season or lets you ride out the year for much-improved leverage in next year's FA class.

Sources: Jason Hammel's deal with the Cubs is for one year. Should fall somewhere in the $6M range. Really nice sign. Could be Feldman 2.0.

Anyway, there you have it. No two ways about what this signing means and everyone involved knows it.

Well, I asked for this 348 days ago. Cheaper than I thought he would be. If he's terrible, then my bad.
