Both Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN are reporting that the St. Louis Rams are planning to hire Gregg Williams to replace just-fired defensive coordinator Tim Walton.
Wow, that didn't take long. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher and Williams are long-time friends and colleagues and Williams was Fisher's first hire as defensive coordinator when he first took over in St. Louis in 2012. Then came Bounty-Gate and Williams' indefinite suspension. The Rams actually had no DC during the 2012 season and Williams' son Blake Williams called the defensive plays. Blake Williams was not well-liked by the veteran coaching staff, however, and Fisher cut ties with both of the Williamses this offseason and hired Tim Walton, who had been the defensive backs coach with the Detroit Lions.
Now the story has come full circle. After being reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Gregg Williams basically did a year of penance as a defensive consultant with the Tennessee Titans and was largely credited with the toughness exhibited by the Titans defense in 2013. No word yet whether Blake will also be welcomed back in St. Louis.
