    The NFL 50 Years Ago

    AFL Eastern

    Buffalo Bills 12-2
    Boston Patriots 10-3-1
    New York Jets 5-8-1
    Houston Oilers 4-10

    Western

    San Diego Chargers 8-5-1
    Kansas City Chiefs 7-7
    Oakland Raiders 5-7-1
    Denver Broncos 2-11-1

    AFC Championship....Buffalo 20 San Diego 7

X-CFLer (straight from high school) Cookie Gilchrist (Bills) a 250 pound fullback was the rushing stud. With HOFer to be Len Dawson (Chiefs) "da man" when it came to QB's. Houston Oiler Charley Hennigan (who became an author after football, his "Slick" a cool read) had one of the greatest seasons ever by anyone....101/1,546/8

Rookie fullback from Southern U Mack "The Truck" Lee Hill (Chiefs) was the talk of the league, he was a monster averaging 5.5 between the tackles!!!!!!!! Just think of "The Beast" only bigger and meaner.

    NFL Eastern

    Cleveland Browns 10-3-1
    St.Louis Cardinals 9-3-2
    Philly Eagles 6-8
    Washington Redskins 6-8
    Dallas Cowboys 5-8-1
    Pittsburgh Steelers 5-9
    New York Giants 2-10-2

    Western

    Baltimore Colts 12-2
    Green Bay Packers 8-5
    Minnesota Vikings 8-5
    Detroit Lions 7-5
    Los Angelas Rams 5-7
    Chicago Bears 5-9
    San Francisco 49ers 4-10 (ouch!)

    NFL Championship...Cleveland 27 Baltimore 0

Jim Brown dominated his era like nobody ever has, here in 64...1,446 with an average per carry of-5,2, wow!
The stud QB is debatable, Bart Starr? John Unitas? Fran Tarkenton? Sonny Jurgenson? All in the Hall of Fame.
The best receiver by far was Johnny Morris (Bears)a little white cat out of U of Santa Barbara, he had 93 receptions and scored 10 tds'. Until the current crop of Bear receivers he was the best they had ever had. Would you beleive TE Mike Ditka was second with 75?

Yep, that was inspired by that...The NFL 50 Years From Now....thread. As you can see pro football is (other than the AFC West) totally different today. So if the league changes as much in the next 50 as it did in the last, we'll still see....

    West

    San Diego Chargers
    Denver Broncos
    Kansas City Chiefs
    Oakland Raiders

John Henry Johnson (Hall of Famer) teaming up with Cookie on the Argonauts gave the CFL the best back field duo ever up to that point in time. Both were big, mean and fast.

Hilarious how St. Louis was in the Eastern division, but GB, Chicago, and Detroit were in the Western. I wonder what the logic in that was.

When the two leagues merged Cleveland, Baltimore and Pittsburgh became AFC teams.

The NFL had 14 teams and needed to even things out to 7 and 7.

It's not about agreeing. But you make a lot of junk and it only stays at the top because people troll it. If we have nothing to say, we should take your advice and say nothing and move along. Then your threads die and we can talk about more interesting things.

I refuse to post in your threads like this unless they're at the top of the page already anymore.

FWIW, ESPN Classic has moved away from this compared to a decade ago, because...well, no one cares. There used to be multiple games a day. It's a shame. I used to live on the channel back then.

I don't have any issue with this thread. It's interesting. I just was suggesting he not troll it if he doesn't like it.

    It doesn't help anything.

What's strange is that there is no region of the country as passionate about football as the south, and that was the region that came late to pro football.
