    2014 Offseason Discussion, news, rumors

Alright folks, the Colts losing means that it's now time for their offseason to begin. Remember, the team will have 36M in cap space (3rd most in the league) and that's before the expected cuts of Toler, Satele, etc..

What do the Colts need to do this offseason to reach the next level?
So Anna, what do you think about the notion that Russell Wilson is better than Andrew Luck?

Interior line needs to be their top priority. Once that is fixed then the rest of the money and draft picks should go to defence.

I am not so sure we should bring Bethea back. Jarius Byrd is a FA. Bethea blew coverage on that Donnie Avery TD and he is over 30. Landry and Byrd would make an elite saftey duo

Sadly, Landry was pretty bad this year and a case could be made that he was even worse than Bethea.

    Stampede Blue's OFFSEASON PRIMER:

The Indianapolis Colts 2013 season officially ended with a 43-22 loss in the divisional round of the playoffs to the New England Patriots. The Colts went 11-5, won the AFC South, and won a playoff game, but they still have a lot of work to do this offseason to improve the team and take the next step. General manager Ryan Grigson will need to have a better offseason than he had last year and will need to use the money and draft picks wisely. According to spotrac.com, the Colts will have over $36 million in cap room this offseason, and that could be more depending on whether they decide to cut some players that take up a lot of cap room. Here's a brief primer of the Colts players who will be free agents this offseason, the draft picks the Colts have, and the needs the Colts have at the moment. We'll have plenty more analysis as the offseason progresses, but here's a basic primer to get you started.
    FREE AGENTS (source: spotrac.com):

UFA (Unrestricted Free Agents) - No restrictions, the player is a free agent and is free to sign with any team

    Antoine Bethea, S
    Adam Vinatieri, K
    Pat McAfee, P
    Donald Brown, RB
    Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR
    Mike McGlynn, OG
    Ahmad Bradshaw, RB
    Vontae Davis, CB
    Jeff Linkenbach, OG
    Cassius Vaughn, CB
    Pat Angerer, ILB
    Aubrayo Franklin, DT
    Fili Moala, DE
    Sergio Brown, S
    Ricardo Mathews, DE
    Lawrence Sidbury, OLB

RFA (Restricted Free Agent) - the player is a free agent but the team can give a qualifying offer, in which case they have the right of first refusal and can match the offer another team gives the player if they so desire

    Kavell Conner, ILB
    Josh Gordy, CB
    Scott Lutrus, ILB
    Joe Reitz, OG
    Jeris Pendleton, DT

ERFA (Exclusive Rights Free Agent) - if the team offers the player a contract, they have no options but to take the contract or not play in the NFL

    Cam Johnson, OLB
    Justin Hickman, ILB

    DRAFT PICKS:

1st round (traded to Cleveland for Trent Richardson)

    2nd round

    3rd round

4th round (traded to Cleveland for draft pick in which they selected Montori Hughes)

    5th round

    6th round

    7th round
OFFSEASON NEEDS (in no particular order):

    Running Back

    Wide Receiver

    Center

    Offensive Guard

    Defensive Linemen

    Inside Linebacker

    Outside Linebacker

    Cornerback

    Safety

    Kicker

    Punter

    Kick Returner

Byrd will be expensive. Why not Kerry Rhodes? I saw Landry lay a big hit in like week 1 and nothing else all year. Bethea is getting up there.

Maybe sign Suh? He'll be expensive but we need a difference maker on D.

I think our WR corps is fine. Whalen/Hilton/Brazil/Reggie/Rogers/Fleener will be fine for next year.

    Definitely need interior line help.

Definitely need new LBs. Keep Mathis and Werner and dump the rest. Need a run stopping stud in the middle. Need someone on the outside who can cover the screens and short passes. A rotation between Mathis, Werner and someone else would be sick.

Vontae is better suited as a #2 and could thrive in that role if we can find a true #1.

    S
    CB
    DT
    MLB
    OLB
    G
    C

If we fix half of those holes we could easily be in the AFC title game.

^No way Detroit lets Suh get away.

Also, don't forget about Dwayne Allen coming back too...receiving wise (& pass protection/run blocking too) will be great to have him back.

I agree with your list, but I would put DT/NT/DE number 1. To have a truly effective 3-4 defense, you need push at the line. RJF/Fili Moala and Franklin/Josh Chapman just didn't get the job done this year, and we really didn't have significant improvement in the run defense this season. Last year we were 29th, this year 26th.
