Report: Spikes' IR designation due to missed practice

FOXBORO (CBS) – New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes’ placement on Injured Reserve this past Monday was not because of an injury, but because he missed a team practice the previous Friday during a snow storm, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported.

The IR designation ended Spikes’ season just days before the team was set to host its playoff opener at Gillette Stadium.

Spikes had been battling a knee injury for more than two months, and it was reported that he had aggravated the injury in the regular-season finale against the Bills. However, Mortensen reports that the injury was not bad enough to put the linebacker on IR.

Probably means it's more likely he's played his last game with us. Another Gator bites the dust

By all accounts it was a mutual decision between the team and Spikes, though. So, whatever that means.

Spikes is currently heading to LA for a second opinion...and surgery isn't the plan as of now. Per Jeff Howe.

He's done in NE. I'm good rolling with Mayo, Hightower, Collins and Fletcher, assuming we resign Dane.

This really does represent the end of an era--not a single University of Florida player is currently on the Patriots 53-man roster.

A cursory glance at old Patriots rosters (via @pfref) reveals that last year Pats had no Florida guys on roster all season was 2004.

#ppgs RT @RapSheet: Asked source close to Spikes if being late to Friday practice helped lead to him being on IR. “Do u believe that stuff?”

#ppgs RT @jeffphowe: One source on Spikes' reported tardiness being tied to IR placement: "Absolutely untrue and unfounded."

It was a well known fact going into this season that this was Spikes last year, the writing had been on the wall for awhile.

I understand the finacial reason behind not bringing him back, but man I will miss him, hopefully he wont have a market and we get him back cheap. Though thats near impossible.

I like Spikes as well for his aggressiveness in the run game, but it comes down to choosing between Talib, Edelman and Spikes. At most we can bring back two and it's obvious we need the first 2 more.

Howe's sources are the Pats FO.

It's also reported that Spikes NEVER arrived at the practice. I don't believe Spikes was head back anyhow, now it's a slam dunk, his days here are done.

6/27/09: “We expect [Rondo] to play by the rules and be a leader as a point guard. We need him to be more of a leader,” Ainge said. “There were just a couple situations where he was late this year, I don’t know if he was sitting in his car, but showed up late and the rest of the team was there. We have team rules and you have to be on time. He was fined for being late, he said he was stuck in traffic, and it’s just unacceptable.”

I think Hightower can play spikes role, Collins can be a monster if he continues to improve and stay consistent

Mayo will be mayo and Dane is a solid player

I don't buy that they IR'd him just because he missed the meeting. He'd be benched or at worst inactive, but IR'd? It's mostly because of the injury which has affected him the last few weeks

It's not the only reason. He's been hurt for weeks and playing poorly (the Miami bench was heckling him during the game because he was so slow).

I think if he wasn't as good when he was good on the field - career wise, that BB would have released him, I think he IR'd him so Spikes could have a fig leaf so he could get a decent offer next year in appreciation, but he's not coming back. Drafting Collins seemed to be part of the plan to make that true anyhow due to his prior issues.

I wonder how much a guy like Spikes is worth in FA. Completely one dimensional but very good at that aspect of the game.

    Welcome to Anfield Mr. Balotelli!
