Looking to clear space on their 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated outfielder Vernon Wells for assignment, ESPN reported.

“Thank you Yankees for opportunity to be part of such a storied franchise,” Wells said on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

The Yankees need to make room on their roster for second baseman Brian Roberts and lefty reliever Matt Thornton. Wells became an expendable part when the team signed Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran earlier this winter.

The Yankees acquired Wells near the end of spring training last March. After smoking opposing pitching in April, his bat cooled and never re-heated. He finished the season with a career-worst .631 on-base plus slugging percentage.

He helped greatly in last years injury depleted year... He showed he could be a team player when he took some innings in the infield when the Yanks needed someone.

I will agree, he has not played up to his contract since he signed it... though, the Yanks would not have paid him much for this season anyway.
