Colts will have 36.6M to spend next offseason

According to @spotrac, the #Colts have $36.6 million projected cap space in 2014. Only the #Raiders (66.5) and #Jaguars (38.0) have more.

Yup! Like I mentioned in another thread they could also clear another 10mil or so in cuts with little cap hit.

My guess is the following will be re-signed or at least be given top priority:

Vontae Davis: Is a true #1 who has played hurt throughout the season, while I don't think he is in the elite CB chatter yet...I believe he has the ability to reach it as he enters his prime.

Pat Mac: Is a top punter and kickoff specialist who has the ability to be used as a FG kicker as well.

    Next Level:

Gordy: Has really stepped up his play late this season and shouldn't cost much to retain. At worst he has the ability to be a good #4 CB on this team.

Boom Boom: While he has played better as of late I don't view him as the FS this defense needs. If you look at Pagano and Manusky's Defenses they usually depend on an elite centerfielder FS. He is not that but a very good option as the nickel who won't hurt you at either Safety spot but at the right price.

Vin: I think this year he wrote his own check and has the ability to return if he wants and on a 1 year deal I don't see why not?

    You never know:

McGlynn: I hope not but the team likes him for some reason? I like him better at Center than Guard and as depth not as a starter.

Reitz: Had the injury bug this year but an athletic former basketball player that has showed the ability to play multiple spots. His athletic ability could be developed into a solid swing Tackle, imo. Shouldn't cost much to retain as a backup.

Link: Another versatile lineman who knows the offense and should provide decent depth at a low cost.

I know I am missing some but off the top of my head this is what I came up with....

FWIW, I was ecstatic last year when there was talk of Indy possibly signing Arthur Jones to an offer sheet last offseason (they didn't unfortunately) as I loved his play from back in his Syracuse days. He has taken his play to another level this past season and is an UFA that I hope they at least kick the tires on?!

I think there is a great chance we sign Jeremy Maclin. Grigson was with Philly when they drafted him and the on knock on him is injuries.

^Yup...as of now (barring any signings before FA starts) so are Golden Tate, and Hakeem Nicks....since we are Talking about another injury prone WR above in Maclin you have to throw Kenny Britt out there. I would say take a stab at Dexter McCluster.....but there is a lot of redundancy in TY and his skill set...TY is a better all around WR though.

So you would rather be 36.6 mil OVER the cap????

Whether you agree or not with last year's spending the proof is in the pudding as Indy is playing Saturday night for a chance to compete in the AFC Championship Game. Not bad for a team in such dire straits injury wise?

Just thought I would throw this out there:

    2013 Stats:

Paul Kruger: 16 games 47 combined tackles 4.5 sacks 2FF and 5 PD

Erik Walden: 15 games (1 game suspension) 45 combined tackles 3 sacks 1 FF 1 FR (Safety) 3 PD

Paul Kruger: 8.2 Million Salary Cap Hit

Erik Walden: 3.073 Million Salary Cap Hit

Walden's money was the better value by far plus after next year he can be waived with little cap consequence. Kruger on the other hand is signed through 2017 with the following breakdown:

'14: 8.2 mil salary 11.8 mil cap hit
'15: 8.2 mil salary 3.6 mil cap hit
    '16: 7.7 ""2.4 ""
    '17: 8.2"" 1.2""

Then factor in that after the 2015 season the following come off their Rookie Contracts and are foundations of the new regime's system:

    Luck
    Hilton
    Allen
    Fleener
    Ballard
    T'Rich
    Chapman

There are other examples I could use like signing Levitre at Tackle money or the fact that Vazquez was widely rumored to have wanted to go to Denver and was one of the first O'Lineman off the board with Denver and things seem to become clearer.....Toler being the one that really stings the most but his contract luckily can be wiped out with little cap hit.

I guess what I am trying to say is that Free Agency is a crap shoot and more often than not the "sexy names" don't work out or cap strap your team. Just food for thought...

Nice write-up Wyld. Very interesting. I completely forgot about Kruger after he signed with Cleveland.

While passing on Kruger wasn't bad, passing on Vasquez was. Grigson better not make the same mistake this year. Sign offensive linemen and don't look back.

I am guessing you are forgetting how he was rumored to only want to go to Denver and signed there very quickly? Just because you have money doesn't mean a player wants to come to your team?

Thanks Bro! Us Yankee fans have a little experience in the buyer beware world of Free Agency

"forgetting" implies that i once knew of it and some how forgot. I've never seen that report before.

My mistake for "implying" what you either forgot, didn't forget, or whatever....though there were multiple reports that this was the case early in Free Agency last season. Either way, you can't make a player sign with you so "implying" the team ****ed it up is doing exactly that, no?

Sucks though as he would have looked good in Blue and White!
