2014 Mock GM Series: Pick Your Safety Poison

I'm bored this weekend, so I thought I'd start a random chatter game. Over the next few months, I'll try and post a scenario or two a week for discussion of "what would YOU do?"

    This week's scenario:

Ownership and advisers have suggested we pursue a safety in free agency (note: Major Wright was resigned mid-season to a 1 year extension because people are incapable of playing a fake game). Who we pursue at this point is irrelevant, but you - the General Manager - have been told that one of our current starters MUST be cut. Also, only ONE of our current starters can be cut. So, who do you choose and why?

Edit: screw it I'll just be politically correct and say that I think Wright is worse because Conte isn't as bad or something. According to PFF he's worse, so there.

Truth be told tho, they both suck pretty hard, so it doesn't matter to me

Wright. He had one of the two lowest PFF grades on the team I believe.

But if it comes down to next year, Ill be picketing outside of Halas Hall for a new deal, a new contract, because Im not going anyplace.

We only have 1 starter right now, though. Wright is an FA.

I think you knew where he is getting at. Let's not get too literal in here k.

It is "Wright is a FA" BTW.

The funny thing was as I was writing that I was like "...nah, I won't add a disclaimer that they're both under contract. People should be able to figure it out."

I'm sitting here and I'm like, you know, Conte seems to lack the instincts to be an impact safety...
Then I'm like, Wright's instincts seem to lead to consistent blown assignments and his aggressiveness seems to often work to a disadvantage. They both leave something to be desired as tacklers, but I would still put my money on Wright any day of the week to make the stop. They were both really bad this year but we have a bigger frame of reference to draw from and I feel like I've seen more good from Wright to feel better about him bouncing back, going forward.

    I would cut Chris.

Wright seems to be capable of making bigger plays. And to play devils advocate a bit, Wright was the better player last year with a greater supporting cast.

I'd cut Wright. I think Conte was left one on one a lot more and that's why he sucked more. I think he can be the better guy of the two.

Wright. Conte seems like he could have a lot of value on special teams and be a decent backup safety.

Id cut Wright, he misses tackles, he gets beat in coverage a lot, and he hasnt improved at all IMO. Conte at least shows he can get INTs and can cover besides what a fluke play where the ball went through his arms and another where he never heard the check to man to man. Not saying Conte is good because he needs to greatly improve on his tackling and his coverage too but he is still better than Wright. Liked Wright when we drafted him never liked him while he was playing though.
