Phillies agree to new TV rights deal

Details have yet to emerge, but it's thought to be a 20-25 year deal beginning after the 2015 season. It is an extension with Comcast, so they are well positioned to avoid the drama that we've seen in San Diego and Houston.

edit: it's reported to be $2.5 billion over 25 years.

Drama in San Diego is the possibility of light rain...
Not the fans being deprived of watching the Padres lose another day.

Houston is a different story though.

Will the phils add a sp and roll the roll dice with the everyday starting 8? Then by July presuming they are as listless as we think, there would be a fire sale with discounts on player contracts bc the team can eat up some contract money

We only get the money after the 2015 season so I can't see it having an immediate effect on Amaro's thinking for the coming season.

^I wrote the long version of that over at FanGraphs. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/dont-...-philadelphia/

Geo, that looks like the plan to me. They may not even add the starter, though I think one more reliever contract is likely.

However, the thing is, by 2015 (I think) a majority of the big money contracts could be off the books so it will be interesting to see where we go from there.

I'll have a read of your post now

Payroll doesn't take a big dip until after the 2016 season: http://mrphilroth.com/mlbpayrolls/

They have about 130 mil committed to 2015 and 120 mil committed to 2016.

Anyone got an idea of how much the 25% stake of comcast Philadelphia will bring in?

Is Comcast a publicly traded company? If so, someone could acquire a prospectus and probably find that info.

Pretty good article on the reality of the deal from a purely financial side of things.
