Pittsburgh Steelers Official Offseason Thread (All signings, trades, rumors ect.)

Unfortunately it's that time. It's the offseason for us. Here's our nice little tidy place for all discussion for roster moves. In this first post I'll keep updating with official moves.

To start here's our list of our official 21 FA's going into this offseason:

On 7/20/14 we took our Calla and Pebble for a stay while on vacation. On 7/21 Calla, who is diabetic, was given 10x her insulin dosage. She wasn't found until 12 hours after being overdosed. After a week and a half of suffering we made the tough decision to put her down because of brain damage and a lack of a quality of life. She was only 7 and her breed lives until their 20's. Over half of our beloved Calla's life was stolen from us.

    From Ed Bouchette:
#Steelers have list of 21 free agents, but there's only a handful who they might try to re-sign. Those would be
    among their biggest needs.
    First, here is the list:
Wide receivers – Plaxico Burress, Jerricho Cotchery, Emmanuel Sanders.

Running backs – Jonathan Dwyer, Felix Jones, LaRod Stephens-Howling.

Tight ends – David Johnson, Michael Palmer.

Offensive linemen – Fernando Velasco, Cody Wallace, Guy Whimper.

Defensive linemen -- Ziggy Hood, Brett Keisel, Al Woods

Linebackers – Stevenson Sylvester, Jamaal Westerman, Jason Worilds.

Defensive backs – Will Allen, Ryan Clark.

Special teams – Punter MatMcBriar, long-snapper Greg Warren.

Who do you try to sign, who do you give a nice pat on the back and say thank you for all your endeavors now go seek your fortune elsewhere?

I have two at the top of my list as must signs: Jason Worilds and Jerricho Cotchery. Two others are in the category of they should try their best to sign: Will Allen and Jonathan Dwyer. four others on the list to try to sign are Ziggy Hood, Al Woods, Fernando Velasco and Greg Warren.

Let us say we tell Woodley: "Hey we can't do this anymore, 3 years $16 Mil take it or leave it. Incentives can get you to $20 mil." If he says no (and key is we have to do this in late Jan.), then screw him, hit the bricks.

But what we have to do out of depth and continually sakes we have to take that same contract and offer it to Worilds. We go him and say "Hey we offered Woodley this same 3 years $16 Mil. He said now. If you take it you're our starter at LOLB." I bet he takes that. He likes it here, and wants to stay if he can start.

Letting them both walk it's a mistake.

    EDIT:
Basically this is the same exact line we took with Wallace and Brown.
Replying to this in this thread because it's more on topic here. Unfortunately.

I know we have no depth which is why I said go through a year of torture that we can't survive. That's what I said in the previous post, go through a 2014 of that and try with someone brand new in 2015. Worilds will demand more money than he's worth for longer than he's worth, all because of his string of six games. A contract I really would not be happy with the team giving out. Ask the Bills or Seahawks if they're happy with the contracts they gave Ryan Fitzpatrick or Matt Flynn because of small sample sizes. As for the Brown-Wallace comparison, the difference between Worilds and Brown is that Brown actually earned his contract. He was a raw 6th round pick who went from fifth on the depth chart to second, plus a Pro Bowl invite, by his second year in the league. Worilds was a 2nd round pick who was basically handed the #1 backup job and could never do anything with it until right before he was going to get paid. Not worth the 4+ year contract he will probably be getting.

If he signs for something like what Willie Gay got, 3 years 4.5 with a maximum cap hit in a single year of 1.5, then sure. But market value won't allow that for a pass rusher who played like he did for those six games.

Must sign: Hood, Woods, Cotchery, Dwyer, Velasco, Warren, Will Allen. Should sign: Cody Wallace. He earned it. He had a bad attitude on the field which is good for us. With Spaeth back I don't think David Johnson is a necessity but he'll probably be available come training camp anyway. Especially if David Paulson doesn't improve his blocking. Guy Whimper surprisingly wasn't the worst offensive lineman ever. I think we found his maximum number of snap counts for the season and I wouldn't be against him being brought back for the same role. Would rather a late round pick, but wouldn't be upset with Whimper.

I would be happy with either Woodley making $4 mil a year for 3 years. Especially if only say $3 mil is guaranteed. It's essentially a 'prove it' contract. If Woodley takes it, we're basically asking him to prove he can stay healthy for a season. If it's for Worilds, it's a prove you aren't a contract year wonder because you can be cut at any time contract.

I agree with most your resignings. I want to see LeRod Stephens-Howlings actually play. I think he can be that nice spark to Bell/Dwyer.

I agree on your assessment of Wallace. Which is why I want him back. Only guy on our line with a mean streak to rival his is DeCastro.

Davis Johnson honestly doesn't have a place anymore. Will Johnson is the FB. Heath is a two way TE, Paulson the pass catcher specialist (but I question that), and Spaeth, our extra tackle. I'm for drafting a TE in this draft. I'm on the fringe about Will Allen. Shamarko should be playing more, and I fear bringing Allen back is going to put Shamarko on the back burner and potentially hurt his development.

The only way to get better is to get these guys on the field… not playing regresses players so much. Thats why Shark has to be on the field if your bringing in a backup safety not Allen. I am a sink or swim kind of guy.

We're at that point. Time for guys to earn their keep on the field rather than wait till contract years to see what they can do.

As for Stephens-Howling, I'd say yes if Felix Jones hadn't been so valuable. I didn't list Jones there but I probably should have, especially as a kick returner with Sanders leaving.

I just hope Wallace doesn't become another Doug Legursky. Pretty good center, completely lost at guard.

I have no idea how, but I forgot about Mike Adams being the third tight end with Kelvin Beachum playing left tackle. No need for David Johnson. I still haven't given up hope on Adams developing into a left tackle though.

If Allen is brought back then Thomas would be, at worst, the third safety. Ideally he'd be the starter and Allen remains the backup, obviously. But we need depth at defensive back regardless.

I think Felix Jones as a response to Stephens-Howling being out. That's why I want to see him back. THey are very similar players and I think that LSH is slightly better athlete than Jones.

So for anyone who still says it's impossible for Colbert to create contracts with 'easy outs' take a look at the structure of the Jay Cutler deal.

Ignore the money, look at the structure. It's brilliant. Basically 3 franchise tags, then 4 non guaranteed 1 year deals.

Then in the most brilliant move if he gets traded then the money gets spread out over multiple years. So it makes it easy to trade him.

Would you say Cutler is as valuable as Ben, Polamalu, Timmons, Woodley (at the time of the contract), or even Taylor? Position aside. Not saying every one of those players are better than Cutler, but it's tough to argue that they're less consistent than him and that the Steelers, again, at the time of their initial contracts, would want to keep those players more than the Bears would want to keep Cutler many years down the road.

I'm just in awe of the contract. Half of it is still gaurenteed. That means Woodley would have still gotten $30 mil in that structure, Timmons would have gotten $25 Mil.

That's more than they got from us.

Why do you have to turn all of it into that argument?

I'm just in awe of the structure. He got great guaranteed money, got the years, looks like he has the power, but in the end the Bears got flexibility of moving him when they want, aren't forced into keeping him the full time. Both sides won in that contract. Mostly because its a 3 year $52 million contract + 4 team option years at about $13 mil each year.

Just found out Cutlers first year cap hit is close to $8 mil less than what he's getting paid.

I'm amazed at Phil Emery's creativity.

Whens the last time your beloved Colbert did something that creative?
