    Kurt Suzuki?????

It has been reported that the Twins have agreed to terms with Kurt Suzuki to shore up their catching position. http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/...&vkey=news_min
1/$2.75MM sounds about right for this guy. He has always been known as a strong defensive catcher but had a great deal of difficulty throwing runners out last season, allowing 57/65 successful SB attempts.

Ok. I guess I don't have anything to add beyond that. Someone made this call yesterday - hats off to them.

Pinto has very Kubel like minor league numbers. I bet the Twins are a bit nervous he will have a Kubel like falling back to earth in his first full year in the majors. This is a bit of insurance I guess.

With higher numbers of at bats Suzuki will show to be a below average hitter. He was a pretty good defensive catcher but last year he struggled throwing out runners. If people claim he is a top flight defensive catcher they're living in the past. He'll have to prove that ability again next year.

He's below average hitting and average with a possibility of above average defense. Exactly what you get for what we paid. Not a value signing at all. This signing won't handcuff us in the future, though.

Trade a turd, sign a turd and proclaim progress. Pretty much how this one can be summed up.

Kubel will be chaper than Doumit. A little more power and a little less contact. If Doumit was to be the DH anyway - someone found value in that he could play catcher for them.

    You're pretty much right, though.

Some fans get excited about new faces. Some fans see old faces which played poorly and refuse to believe they might have a better season in them next year.

the question with Kubel is....who is he now, the 2013 version or the 2012? ...well that and we've never (other than Thome) had someone who was strictly DH and doubt we'd put him in our OF

I think he's somewhere in between and will fill in occasionally at LF, RF, maybe 1B, but mostly play DH vs. righties.

Who knows what he'll be like. For the price - we can invite him to spring training. If he's making solid contact he makes the roster and gets 100 at bats. If they go well for him, we push 100 into 250 at bats.

That'll be the season for Kubel.

He gives us a small insurance plan if Willingham doesn't find his power stroke this year. A downgrade none the less but that's what an insurance plan buys in this league.
