Steen signs 3-year $17.4 milla milla extension

    http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/10...year-extension

ST. LOUIS -- Blues forward Alexander Steen has agreed to terms on a three-year, $17.4 million contract extension.

The extension also includes a no-trade clause, which takes effect immediately. Steen will make salaries of $5.1 million, $5.8 million and $6.5 million, according to his agent.

The 29-year-old Steen is having the best season of his career with 22 goals and 36 points in 33 games. He was the first player in the NHL to score in each of the team's first 10 wins since Eric Lindros in 1993-94 and scored 20 goals in 24 games, a franchise best since Brett Hull in 1990-91.

Steen became the first Blues player to get a point in 13 straight games since Pierre Turgeon in 1999-2000. He's among the league leaders in most major categories and he and the Kings' Anze Kopitar are the only forwards in the NHL averaging over 15 minutes of even-strength time, two minutes of short-handed time and three minutes on the power play.
having a great year. anyone think he can repeat it or is he just a one hit wonder?

I think it's an overpay. He's been great this year, but he's never scored more than 24 goals or had more than 51 pts in a year. His shooting % is at 19.6 when he's shot 9.9% for his career so there is some major regression coming. The only good thing about the contract is that it's only 3 years.

Overpaid, but let's break it down a bit.

Alex Steen's PPG is generally on pace for around 50 points. He's usually in that sort of area, minus this season. He's not elite defensively, not great defensively, but he's solid.

He's on pace for over a PPG 35 games into the NHL season. We got that so far? His numbers are up there.

Now you have annual salaries going up like crazy. Alexander Semin is at 7.5M, David Clarkson is at 5.4M, Nathan Horton is at 5.2M, and etc. Those guys are all inked up for 6+ seasons. Recent contracts too, all under a year's old.

So now you have Alexander Steen. He's a consistent .70 PPG player that will miss 10-15 games a season. He's been healthy thus far. He's looking like he'll hit 70 points this season, possibly higher. Salary cap is going up. He's in his peak, he's turning 30 in March, and looks like a player that they can't risk losing.

It's not horrible. I'd say slightly overpaid. It's only thee years. I don't know if I'd even call it overpaid in this little new era now, with these new salaries post lockout.

Might be an overpay for now, but with the cap going up that's pretty solid in the later years.

Only 3 years, that is a good deal for the Blues. If he produces at his current pace, or around it, then the price is really good. Even if he doesn't it is only a slight overpay for 3 years.

This isn't bad, Perry got 8.6 compared to Steen 5.8.
I think St.Louis should make a move for Ryan Miller

Really? I think this is a great deal

Steen has been great for them (even before this year) on both ends of the ice. To get a consistent 40/50-point guy with 2-way ability will cost around $5 million in free agency anyway. The fact that they got him at $5.8 million is very fair considering he could have really cashed in.

The part that makes this a steal for St.Louis is the term because Steen has had injury issues, and they don't risk very much.

Had Steen went to free agency this year with a 30 goal 25 assist season i could still see him getting $5.5 million offers tbh. Maybe it's my bias though because i like Steen as a player (former Leaf 1st rounder).

I think Steen could have got up to 7 or more in the open market. Semin got 7

Compared Steen's cap hit with Perrys? so what? I'm using a recent signing of a winger to compare his value.
We can use Eberle or Hall at 6 if u'd like. Either way, It's not too bad considering.

I think this is a good deal for St. Louis. It's only 3 years, so they overpay a bit per year but don't take the risk of a long term contract. He's a great two way player so he'll always have a role on the team even if he can't keep up his pace. Plus if Steen hit the open market, he'd get 6 years and a bigger cap hit.
