    Yankees/Beltran make it official

    What's the holdup with Beltran?
    December, 18, 2013
    By Wallace Matthews | ESPNNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- It has been 12 days now since it was reported the Yankees had come to terms with Carlos Beltran on a three-year, $45 million contract. Twelve days since Mrs. Beltran tweeted, joyously about returning to NY.

And yet, here we are, on Dec. 18, and the deal is not officially done.

I called GM Brian Cashman this morning to ask what was up and was somewhat surprised by his response: "There are terms to do, physicals to take, items to be worked out when you do a contract ... There's no scoop here. Nothing's falling apart. I don't have time to deal with stupid questions like this."

Funny, I never implied, or thought, that anything was "falling apart," just was looking for a heads up as to when the next rollout news conference might be. If that was a stupid question, I plead guilty. But the GM's response seemed just a tad, well, over the top. Seems as if it would have been just as easy to say, "No biggie, we're just working out some details but it's going to get done."

That would have settled the matter. The way he responded only unsettled it, at least in my mind.

For the moment, let's take Cashman at his word, that the delay in announcing the Beltran signing is perfectly routine.

But if, just if, the deal winds up "falling apart" -- his words, not mine -- this conversation will have turned out to be prophetic.
Figured it's been a relatively slow week, and this article would suffice for now.

PS, I don't think the deal will fall apart.

Sounds like Wallace Matthews is a bit butt hurt. Maybe he shouldn't take offense when he doesn't know the context. Perhaps Cashman was having a rough morning, who knows?

I honestly feel like Matthews should get a nice talking-to for putting out an article like this. It isn't really even news. It just says that he called Cashman and got a rude-ish response. Then he proceeds to use the other 75% of the article to complain. It's just so funny to me that ESPN would allow an article like this to be published. Anyone else thinking the same?

Even if it does fall apart it's really not that big a deal.

Not a stupid question. Sounds like Cashman has something up his ***. A simple, "Nothing's wrong, we're just wrapping up some things on the deal".
That's it. Then say 'goodbye' and move on.

Thats what is wrong with the world. These writers are not held responsible for their own actions. He doesn't even say what he asked Cashman... "I called to ask what was up." So you called Brian Cashman and said "whats up dude?" and expected some profound answer to life or something?

Nobody but Cashman and Wally Mathews know what the exchange was. Here is how I'd imagine it went, considering I deal with the press quite often.
Mathews: Hey Brian, its Wally Mathews. How are you doing?
Cash: Oh hey buddy. Good whats up?
M: Whats the deal with the Beltran signing?
C: Nothing just working out the details.
M: Well whats the hold up? Why isn't it official?
C: Well, there are just details to finish up.
M: Come on Cash, you have to give me something man? What is the problem?
C: No problem... then goes on mini rant about this nonsense.
    Suck it
