Love this signing, one more solid BP player and our pitching is set, and I still doubt Tanaka will be available this season

Solid signing. There aren't many lefty relievers, this effective. Howell did a great job for us in 2013, and I think he'll follow up well for the next two. This deal is a win-win for both parties.

Could we possibly be seeing a beard battle in the bullpen?

JP's effectiveness is a bit overstated.

He had the nice, pretty ERA but
That was buoyed by a career low BABIP of .241 compared to a career average of .285 (but just .252 as a reliever) and a career low HR/FB rate of 4.3% compared to a career average of 12.6%.

Expect Howell to give up more hits and more home runs next season.

    No

    Wilson $10 million
    League $7.5 million
    Jansen $5 million
    Howell $6 million

Even if we add in Beckett or Billingsley we're not getting anywhere near $100 million.

I'd still like to add Benoit for $10 million or Crain for $5

I'm a big fan of Jesse Crain, would fill out a solid pen, with more young arms in the waiting

I don't like this signing much. Is it just me or is it crazy to have these relievers making this much money? The team always managed to have a strong bullpen with guys like Guerra closing. Relievers are really up and down with much money invested they can't really afford to miss. With guys making this much money can they team just cut them? They could end up getting stuck having to play 2 or 3 struggling relievers if things go wrong.
