    The Edgar Martinez Debate

I've already talked a little about this before on this site, but every once in awhile I catch myself looking at some old Edgar Martinez stats, and I get sad. He's pretty far from ever making the Hall of Fame it seems.

Great hitter. Didn't play defense, but was feared by most pitchers, and had some of the most monster seasons for a right handed hitter ever.

I honestly think if they had a vote for Edgar Martinez in the hall of fame, and only allowed players who pitched against him to vote... He'd probably get 85%+.

Great player, and actually a very quiet, humble, and nice person. Also arguably a top 5 right handed hitter over the last 35 years.

What do you guys think? Should he make it? Will he make it?

    He should but he won't.

Vic Mackey: You better figure out how much you hate me. And how you're going to deal with that. 'Cause I'm not going anywhere.

This sums up every sports interview, ever.

I have no idea if he will get in, but he should. there shouldn't even be a debate. career numbers- .312/.418/.515/.933.
just because he didn't play defense doesn't mean he wasn't one of the best hitters in the game.

    .312 (.3115) AVG. 95th all time.
    .418 (.4178) OBP. 21st all time.
    .515 SLG. 68th all time.
.933 OPS. tied for 33rd all time.

he is one of the best hitters in baseball history.

That's what I'm saying. I mean I get the fact he didn't play defense, and that helped his health immensely, but he had to. Edgar's knees were shot by age 28.

I always thought Edgar was great being a Seattle fan, but he wasn't just great he was AMAZING. I can't think of any righty in the last 30 years (i'm sure there is one I just can't think of it) who posted a 475+ OBP in a season. I thought Pujols, but his highest was .443.

It just drives me crazy. The best DH award is called the Edgar Martinez Award. How do you not let this guy into the hall of fame.

Edit: Pujols highest OBP for a season is .462.

I think he makes it in the Hall. One of the best DH's of all time and a solid player for many years.
With the deepest of regrets I am announcing that I will be leaving Pro Sports Daily. No reason in particular but wanted to thank everyone for a great 6 years here. Lots of great discussion and good poll series as well. Also fun re-drafts. Best of luck to you all in the future.

Oh yeah, and for the record when he did play defense (3B) he was pretty good too.

Sad part is, I think Ortiz is a lock. Martinez deserves it. Changed the way we look at DH

    The Edgar Martinez Debate

The whole "he didn't play defense" argument is terrible.

What about those in the Hall of Fame that were negative defensive players? That part of their game was overlooked because of their offense - yet Martinez as a DH was neither a plus nor minus, so he's not deserving?

It's like saying a pitcher shouldn't make the Hall unless he's also a good hitter. Where's the logic in that?

Ortiz used PEDs in the past so he is pretty far from a lock.

He was on a list, with no explanation. Stop throwing crap out there. Show the positive test result, you can't. Edgar used PEDs too, he was on some list I saw.

The biggest problem is Edgar played during the PED's era. That's gonna hurt most players with great numbers.

That said, there is no doubt in my mind that he was a user.

It's stupid. They have no problem voting relievers in, but DH's are too specialized?

    Lol.

Edgar deserves to be in. He's one of the best players not in the hall.

Mariano Rivera calls him the best hitter he ever faced.
