Dodger fan isn't sure about this move.

Loney's never been able to sustain any above average offensive performance (career 105 wRC+).

He hit .348/.131/118 (OBP/ISO/wRC+) last year. He had a .326 BABIP, but also a line drive rate near 30%. Loney's always been a good line drive hitter (23.6% career - 4th in the majors (min 3000 PA) over that time) but he hasn't had great BABIPs or much power.

IF he can maintain something like a 110 wRC+ he's a league average player at 1B. 4 of his 8 major league seasons have been 110+ and 2 of those seasons were partial seasons.

Terrible for Tampa certainly. They should have gone after Mike Morse, Corey Hart or Morneau. No way in hell is Loney worth 7 million a year.

I'd, without a doubt, take Loney over all those guys but Hart.

For those not liking this deal....if Loney can sustain his LD rate, it's going to be a great signing for the Rays.

    What makes you say that?

Contact rates are pretty consistent for players.

Well, it was near 30% this season compared to 23% for his career

This, and 30% is generally unsustainable. Ruben Tejada taught me that.

I'll def give you Tejada, but generally high line drive hitters remain high line drive hitters

Sure, but even if he regresses to 25% he is going to be productive.

I thought getting Loney for cheap was a solid deal the first time but this doesn't look nearly as promising. He fell apart in the second half and that worries me a bit.

But it's difficult to sustain a number so high.

Loney had a 25% LD rate in 2012 and he sucked.
