The Mets aren't always going to be struggling financially. As recent as 4 years ago this was a 140 M salary team. The cost cutting was a necessary step tied to the Picard clawback and the team being laden with underperforming contracts due to injuries.
The contracts are gone and the financial picture is favorably clearer now. Should the Mets be in the arena for Cano? Would Cano take a slightly smaller offer to remain in NY?
An offer of 200M and 8 yrs would make the Mets relevant again and boost attendance. Cano relationship with JayZ is more than baseball is it about branding and NY is the venue for developing that, not Seattle.
Murphy although light in power for a 1B is defensively stronger there than at 2B, and his BA and his baserunning compensate for the some of lost power of a typical 1B. Worst case he becomes a desirable trading chip.
Free agency had few impactful players, Ellsbury, Choo and Cano. Ellsbury and Choo are not the right fit for the Mets, Cano is. All the others Granderson, Cruz are total wastes of money.
