they need players to put people in the seats...can't rely on a manager to do so

I just hope he can put together a coaching staff that is good at developing young players. I also hope he is someone who can bring some life to the clubhouse, we have been flat the past few years. I know a lot of that is on the players, but seriously, watching the Cardinals in the WS and seeing players constantly talking with the coaches and staying upbeat, that goes a long way during a 162+ game season.

    He'll turn 52 on Christmas.

If they do end up hiring him (It sounds like its a lock) it would be interesting to find out if Ausmus was a real possibility before he went to the Tigers but we had to wait to try to talk to Lovullo. Which would be really sucky:
    Shooting for Giradi......MISS
    Ok lets wait for Lovullo.....DENIED
Alright well we can always fall back on Ausmus......TOO LATE
    Rick Renteria??.......FINALLY

I dont think thats what happened (mainly because from the get go the news was that Renteria was the leader) but if it did happen like that, it just proves NYF's assumption that they really had no back up plan after Girardi

Ausmus wasn't one of the initial names despite being another San Diego guy they were familiar with. Even after interviewing with Detroit it seems he waited to interview in Chicago. I think the Cubs passed on Ausmus. He would have been my guy after Girardi. Beyod that I agree with everything you posted here, unfortunately. Very non-plusssed by the handling of this whole process to be honest.

If Renteria can somehow connect with Castro and the upcoming Latin players, this ends up being a great hire. I have to assume that Castro's regression and Baez and Almora's eventual arrival had a lot to do with this choice.

This process also could have been extended because Renteria was just cleared to travel...he hasn't been able to travel for a few weeks due to the hip surgery he had...rather than people in the media and on here saying it took so long because the Cubs weren't sold on him...they gave a deadline...and they fit the hiring in under that deadline...obviously they would want Rick to be able to be at Wrigley when they announced it.

Apparently he was the man for a while from the sounds of it. The Cubs were waiting for him to be able to travel. That McLeod and Hoyer were very big backers of him. I'm not against him as I've said before. i'm just not sure of anything on him baseball wise. But he could end up being a great hire.

Little bit of info on him.
