    Grizzlies-Mavericks Preview
    STATS LLC

The Memphis Grizzlies began last season with a loss before reeling off a lengthy winning streak on their way to the best season in franchise history.

After bouncing back from a season-opening defeat, they'll look to follow a similar path as they seek a fifth victory in the last six meetings with the host Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night.

Memphis (1-1) trailed by 21 at halftime and couldn't quite recover in a 101-94 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday, but it scored 11 of the first 13 points of overtime Friday and beat Detroit 111-108.

Mike Conley scored 22 points and Marc Gasol added 15, including a tying tip-in with 8.2 seconds left in regulation, as the Grizzlies improved to 41-4 when scoring at least 100 points since the start of the 2011-12 season.

"I thought our big guys came in and made plays," Conley said. "Marc made plays down the stretch. Tayshaun (Prince) came in and hit a couple of big buckets, and that's what we expect from guys who know and have been in these situations we have been in."

Conley committed five of the team's 20 turnovers, though, and he knows Memphis needs to improve moving forward.

"They were throwing a lot of different things at us, but a lot of it was just mental errors," he said. "We were making errant passes and not focused at certain times."

The Grizzlies also dropped their opener last season before beginning an eight-game winning streak. They went on to win a franchise-best 56 games and made their first Western Conference finals appearance, falling to the Spurs in four games.

Lionel Hollins coached that squad, though his contract wasn't renewed at the end of the season. Dave Joerger picked up his first victory as head coach Friday.

"I think maturity allows you to understand the situation and embrace the situation," Conley said. "We've been there before."

Memphis won three of four matchups last season with Dallas, which is coming off a 113-105 loss to Houston on Friday.

The Mavericks (1-1) beat Atlanta in their opener, but they fell behind by 16 at the end of the first quarter against the Rockets and only led 1-0 on Shawn Marion's free throw less than one minute into the contest.

"We have to play better at the start of the game," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Our play in the first quarter put us in such a hole that we could never get back over the hump."

Dallas pulled within eight with eight minutes left, but Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 22 points, fouled out soon after.

"We didn't deserve to win," Nowitzki said. "We weren't good defensively and we shot 38 percent."

Monta Ellis followed up his 32-point effort in the opener by scoring 20, though he committed five of the team's 14 turnovers. Ellis is averaging 9.0 points while shooting 8 of 44 from the field in his last three against the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies won the most recent meeting 103-97 on April 15 despite Nowitzki's 26 points. Conley had only six points in that contest and averaged 6.8 while shooting 25 percent against Dallas last season.

    Celtics-Grizzlies Preview
    STATS LLC

It's taking the Boston Celtics longer than they'd hoped to earn first-year coach Brad Stevens his first NBA win.

Getting it Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies would also avoid the franchise's first 0-4 start since 1969.

The Celtics (0-3) fell 87-77 Sunday at Detroit after momentarily overcoming a 15-point second-half deficit. They grabbed a two-point lead with a 13-0 run, but the Pistons responded with 10 straight points for a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"We just have to get better," Celtics rookie Kelly Olynyk told the team's official website. "They capitalized on their chances. They're big and strong. Those bigs they have are really, really good. We cut it close a couple of times, but that's not good enough when you play in this league. We're getting better and hopefully we can string together a couple of wins."

Olynyk led the Celtics with 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Avery Bradley and Jordan Crawford scored 13 apiece.

"I thought we saw a lot of good things out of Kelly O," Stevens said. "We saw a lot of good things out of Avery Bradley tonight even though he turned it over some. I thought he played really hard and kind of got back to who he really is."

They're certainly missing point guard Rajon Rondo, who continues to recover from a torn right ACL. A 24-turnover night upped their league-worst average to 21.0 per game.

Poor 3-point shooting has also contributed to the slow start. Boston was 3 of 16 from long range against the Pistons and is shooting 22.2 percent this season.

They've also been outrebounded 51-33 on the offensive glass.

The Grizzlies (1-2) are coming off Saturday's 111-99 loss at Dallas. They trailed by 21 in the first half but stayed close with a 17-2 run before the break.

"We fought back into the game," Marc Gasol said. "We just didn't convert enough baskets to get to a tie game or ahead."

Mike Conley scored 24, Gasol had 23 and Zach Randolph added 21 as the trio combined for 68 of the team's 99 points.

Conley is averaging 20.0 points through three games after turning in a career-high 14.6 in 2012-13. He's averaging 11.7 in 11 career games against the Celtics.

The Grizzlies also struggled from 3-point range, going 3 of 16.

They sent the Mavericks to the line 46 times and turned the ball over 18 times after committing 20 turnovers Friday against Detroit.

"The turnovers -- 18 -- that's like 4 too many," Grizzlies coach David Joerger said. "Because you're down 10 (points), OK, you got to 7 and then you make a mistake and it bounces back to 11 or 12."

The Grizzlies won both meetings against the Celtics last season. Jerryd Bayless led seven players in double figures with 30 points in a 110-106 victory March 23, ending a five-game home losing streak in the series.

We need to get back to playing hard nosed defense tonight

Defense stepped up and only allowed 36 pts in the second half. Win 95-88, I'll take it!

    Pelicans-Grizzlies Preview
    STATS LLC

The Memphis Grizzlies went 10-6 within what was arguably the toughest division in basketball a season ago.

They'll try to avoid falling to 0-3 against their fellow Southwest Division foes Wednesday night when they host the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Southwest was the only division last season to have four teams at .500 or better, sending three to the postseason and producing both Western Conference finalists.

The Grizzlies (2-2) already have division losses to Dallas and San Antonio -- both on the road -- but bounced back from Saturday's 111-99 loss to the Mavericks on Monday with a 95-88 win over Boston.

Mike Conley, Zach Randolph and reserve Jerryd Bayless each scored 15 to lead the Grizzlies, who trailed by six heading into the fourth quarter. Bayless scored all of his points in the final period on 6-of-7 shooting after missing his first four shots of the game.

"I kept looking at my staff saying: 'When should I put Mike Conley in?'" Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. "And then Jerryd Bayless kept making buckets, and I would be silly if I took Jerryd Bayless out of the game."

Conley is averaging 18.8 points after turning in a career-high 14.6 last year. He's cracked 20 in each of his last two games against New Orleans.

The Pelicans (1-3) have hit 28 of 54 attempts from 3-point range (51.9 percent), but they're connecting on just 39.6 percent from inside the arc this year. They've been the best outside shooting team in the league despite being without top 3-point shooter Ryan Anderson, who has missed the start of the season with a chipped bone in his toe.

A 10-of-18 night from 3-point range wasn't enough in Tuesday's 104-98 home loss to Phoenix.

The Pelicans jumped out to a 28-17 lead after 12 minutes and led by 10 in the third quarter, but the Suns hit 12 of 13 shots and six 3-pointers in a row to pull ahead.

"We had a good first quarter, but after that we went away from the things that are necessary for us to be good," coach Monty Williams said. "The second half was just totally not the way we play in practice."

Eric Gordon scored a team-high 20 points while Jrue Holiday was held to three points on 1-of-7 shooting. He's 6 of 20 with 17 points in his last two games after averaging 20.5 in the first two.

New Orleans has been getting some solid interior play from Anthony Davis, but the second-year forward went 5 for 14 against the Suns and has now shot at or under 40 percent in three of four games.

He's averaging 22.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.25 blocks per game and is 26 of 28 from the foul line.

These teams split four games in 2012-13, with New Orleans taking the last meeting 90-83 on March 22 behind Davis' 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Looking forward to a good game tonight! Will be interested to see how we defend the 3 pt line and how we contain Davis. I say let ZBO and Ed take turns on him
