Andruw Jones still getting it done

Andruw Jones gets RBI in 10th
    Updated: October 31, 2013, 11:35 AM ET
    Associated Press

TOKYO -- Andruw Jones and Ginji Akaminai had run-scoring singles in the 10th inning Thursday, leading the Rakuten Eagles past the Yomiuri Giants 4-2 for a 3-2 lead in the Japan Series.

The Pacific League champion Eagles can wrap up the title Saturday at home when they are likely to start ace Masahiro Tanaka. Tanaka went 24-0 this season and has four complete-game wins in four career postseason starts.

Jones, a 17-year MLB veteran who last played for the New York Yankees in 2012, also hit a three-run homer in a Game 4 loss for the Eagles.

The Giants are Japan's oldest and most successful franchise. The Eagles are the newest team and became the first expansion team in Japanese baseball in 50 years in 2005.

The Eagles are the only professional team in the Tohoku region that was devastated by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crises.

Don't confuse this with a let's sign Andruw Jones agenda... just nice to see an old friend doing well.

Wonder if we'll ever see Andruw pop up on the American baseball scene again. I bet he could still be useful as a lefty-mashing pinch hitter.

    *puts on Andruw bias shades*

Higher career rWAR than Murphy as a Brave, in 800 fewer ABs (LINK). That #3 is retired. Even Justice got his own day of recognition in the Braves HOF. Just sayin'.

Honestly, I'm really looking forward to Andruw's post-career discussion. Once the book is closed on his playing years, and everyone has a few years to assess and forget the emotion associated with an often-controversial player, what will the public opinion be? Arguably the best defensive center fielder of all time at his peak, with 434 career homers, five top-20 MVP finishes (including eighth place in 2000 and second place in '08)? Is that a number you retire? Does that get HoF votes? It'll be fascinating to see.
