Sounds like what that offers were, were probably about equal to the comp pick they expect.

no why would it be a mistake?

The Giants are 2 games out of first place in the NFC East. Ultimately the Giants are Better with Nicks then without. Even if they cant resign Nicks, they will get a compensation pick if he decides to leave.

How does that work? What round would the pick be?

I have a feeling the Giants will find a way to work something out.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula.

There are two big points that need to be addressed to find out if they should have traded him.

What offers were on the table?

    and

Do they expect him to be on the team next year?

If no one offered him better than a third round pick, than they were better off keeping him and trying to win the division. They are only 2 games back with 8 to go in a division where no team has separated itself from the pack.

If they dont expect him to be back with the team next year and were offered a second or higher, they probably should have traded him. Unfortunately, nobody know what was offered for him.
    Go Knicks!

The Giants cap space is fine next season with 51 signed within $92 million

Trading Nicks for a 3rd rounder is ridiculous b/c the money allocated towards a 3rd rounder can be used for a free agent.
    Done - thank goodness

That was not true. It was a made up story by the media.

So, there wasn’t an offer, no one wanted him, how can you trade a player that no one makes an offer on? How can you make a mistake without a decision on an actual deal being in place? Where or what is the mistake? I just don’t get it…
