Let the offseason chatter begin.
So depressing be done here. I'd like to say it now. I would be perfectly happy with the same starting roster... Just change some bench players, get a better bullpen, and get a new manager. Not that Leyland is a bad manager, but we need a change... And he is the easiest piece to Change.
If they don't address the bullpen then I expect nothing more than another early exit next year, assuming we even get there. There is no excuse to not fix it.
The bullpen is the most difficult "position" to address. Way too often guys perform well, get signed elsewhere, and stink it up. Hopefully DD can find another Benoit.
It is a volatile position I agree but given what this team has produced you almost have to take that gamble. You know what some of these clowns have (Coke, Al-Al etc.) it's time to see if a couple of other pieces could help fix those holes.
I say we go crazy sign Granderson for Left Field or put Omar Infante out there (Assuming he Re-Signs), offer Cano a 6 Year $140 Million Contract. And Lincecum for the bullpen.
I can dream, Right? (Though it could be realistic depending on how Illitch wants to go about things)
2013-14 Adopt a Lion: Ezekiel 'Ziggy' Ansah
Forced Fumbles: 2
A name I've seen brought out to fix our leadoff spot mess, and I think is a perfect fit ironically, would be Jacoby Ellsbury. Gets on base consistently and can steal a ton, A-Jax does neither.
Bring back Rusty Staub!
"Lions, Tigers and Pistons, OH MY!" (and Hoosiers...and Redwings....)
i love the idea of signing ellsbury but his price tag figures to be outrageous because hes a boras guy. if we could sign him tho, then we can let castellanos move back to 3rd in the minors to prepare for 2015 when prince goes to DH and Cabby goes back to first. I also like the idea of signing jhonny for a cheap contract and putting him back in left, but that doesnt really fix our speed problem. We gotta get a new manager to motivate these guys. Also, a legitimate closer would be nice
They will not spend any more rediculous money UNTIL Cabby is locked up. If they spend the big bucks without getting an extension done, I will be extremely pissed
Additionally, I wonder if the Cards would bite on a deal for Scherzer for Oscar Tavares (their top prospect). If the Tigers can get a stud OF prospect and pen help, they'd be dumb to not move Scherzer. This team needs to be rebuilt IMO. Still biult around Miggy and Prince, but they need more speed in the lineup and more contact hitters. 2015 will be the season when we see that change I bet
Yeah lets go out and spend ridiculous money on another player like that fat slob Prince... Not that the playoffs are over he can kick back and enjoy his millions while he devours bag after bag of Doritos and donuts all winter
I know we made it to the title game again but this team was built for the World Series and should have been to the World Series. In light of that, I think change is in order. We need a young mind at the helm with enthusiasm and a knowledge of base running and game management. To me, the best team in baseball for that is the Tampa Bay Rays. They do more with less every year. I'd love to give Dave Martinez a shot at the managers job. He's an ex-player who will be able to deal with the players on our roster.
The players on our roster. First off, I love what Victor Martinez brings but with the signing of Prince, he's always been a bit of a detriment. So, thank you Victor but we must move on. We will also move on with Peralta, Infante, Benoit, Coke, Kelly, Dotel, and Pena. Not only will this eliminate some payroll but it will, I think, get us some comp picks in the draft to help re-stock. It will also allow us to get younger.
I would also trade Scherzer. Preferrably to Colorado (with Alberquerque and Collins) for Rex Brothers, Nolan Arenado, Rosell Herrara, and Tyler Anderson. Brothers is probably the best LHR out there and is still young. Arenado is going to be a stud 3B who can play there and allow Cabrerra/Fielder to switch and play 1B/DH. Herrara is a very good infield prospect and Anderson is a mid-level LH starter.
After all the above is done I dabble in FA. I sign Edward Mujica to a 3 year $21M contract and I sign Boone Logan (not sure what it would cost but pay the man!). This shores up our pen. We re-sign Veras (I know, he didn't have a very good playoff but for $3.5M he's value). Then I sign some bench bats that are very much needed. Those would be Ben Zobrist (a bit costly but he can play anywhere) and Juan Uribe (solid 1B/3B/DH bat).
Finally, I leave Castellanos on the roster as well as Hernan Perez. Here's the team Martinez gets to work with:
Rondon- set up
*minor league or vet fill ins where needed
A little more youth and spunk, some speed on the basepaths (or a manager that will let them run), still have some pop, better bench, 100% better pen, and not too much drop off in the starters. Less payroll, more picks.
