Callahan Out 3-4 Weeks With a Broken Thumb

    Andrew Gross ‏@AGrossRecord 16s
#NYR announce Ryan Callahan out 3-4 weeks with a broken thumb suffered Wednesday at Washington.
That sucks with Nash being out. I guess the good thing is Hagelin will be back soon.

Rangers have recalled Darroll Powe to replace Callahan. Yes, Powe got recalled over Chris Kreider. Someone explain to me the logic on that.

This is awful news for us. Why are they calling up Powe?? Guy hasn't scored a goal for us and we're short 3 of our top 6 point producers.

My guess is on Kreider, Rangers don't want to call him up and down all year like before. Once they call him up, will be for good. We'll see
I don't get it either though because the Rangers have Boyle, Moore, Stepan, and Pyatt to kill penalties and it hasn't been bad so far.

Are there any different cap implications between the 2 players?

    Welcome back!

    Thanks.

With the buried rule, Powe is scheduled to only be a 141 K cap hit so i guess that's the difference. I don't know what the difference is in salary between Kreider's 2 way contract in regards to his time in the AHL and the NHL. Not to mention whatever bonuses he is owed.

There is also the possibility that they are sent down the AHL, which would still have the Rangers on the hook for their cap hit, but at a very minimum rate. With the buried rule, it would be Powe and Asham's NHL salary minus the minimum league salary ($550,000 + $375,000). So in the event that they are retained and sent down, the Rangers would only being paying Asham $75,000 and Powe $141,667. Which, would have the Rangers saving $1,850,000 by the end of all of this.

We are playing great and this is even better news. Who do you think will be on his line? Brassard? I'd hate to see them do anything to disrupt the lines that had so much success recently.
