Knick UpdatesCarmelo Anthony said in an interview with the New York Observer recently that he wants to become an unrestricted free agent.
"I think everybody in the NBA dreams to be a free agent at least one time in their career," he said. This doesn't necessarily mean he wants to leave the Knicks, as they can pay him $129 million over five years if he opts out early next summer and then re-signs, while another team could pay him 'just' $96 million over four years. Whatever decision he makes, you can expect the "Summer of Melodrama" when he likely opts out in July of 2014.Metta World Peace turned his ankle during Wednesday's practice but he's expected to be fine.
"I got word that he'll be OK," Mike Woodson said. With J.R. Smith (knee) and Kenyon Martin (ankle) already limited by injuries, the Knicks could ill afford to have Metta suffer any serious damage. We're considering him questionable for Thursday's road game vs. the Wizards.Iman Shumpert has edged ahead of the injured J.R. Smith in their battle to be the Knicks' starting shooting guard.
Mike Woodson has indicated that Shumpert currently has the inside track on Smith due to the latter’s health and Smith echoed those sentiments on Tuesday. "It's a competition at this point he's winning." Smith said. "He's healthy, he's able to play." Winning a starting job in October doesn’t mean that Shumpert will start the entire season, but as long as Shumpert can hold off Smith for the Knicks’ starting SG job, he should be a player to target at the end of drafts due to his potential to ring up steals in bunches.Jeremy Tyler (foot) could resume running by the end of training camp.
He has an outside shot to be the backup center to Tyson Chandler and has been impressing the team. Despite his physical tools, Tyler has been very inconsistent through is career, so nothing is guaranteed for him this season.
