Geno Smith earns Player of the Week
's Monday night performance not only won over critics and headline writers, it also earned him the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award for Week 5.
Smith completed 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns, but it was his poise down the stretch, leading the New York Jets to a 30-28 last-second victory over the Atlanta Falcons, that most likely earned him the award.
Staying in the AFC, Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson had a turn-back-the-clock performance to win the Defensive Player of the Week award. The Heisman Trophy winner tied an NFL record by recording his 13th defensive touchdown Sunday night on a fumble recovery. He also had a game-ending interception.
Rounding out the AFC awards is Cleveland Browns punt returner Travis Benjamin takes home the special teams honors. Benjamin was a clear choice after his team-record 179-yard performance, including a 79-yard touchdown. Benjamin was so good he got a punter fired.
