Is Legarrette Blount underated or underappreciated?

I know he was a head case and has had fumbling issues in the past, but I don't get how people can ignore the guy's abilty. He reminds me of a more evolved form of Jerome Bettis, and I thought he did very well for a Tampa Bay team that played from behind mostly. Now with Tom Brady, and Stevan Ridley being hurt I really think this guy is going to make a name for himself as a Pat and I don't think Ridley will get his job back. Belichik can make a star out of anyone, can't wait to see what he does with Blount.

If he could pass protect better or catch the ball at all he could be a beast, Also for his size in inability to be a short yardage back is somewhat baffling. But just since he can only really play the first two downs really limits his impact. But since i picked him up this week for fantasy i hope he destroys the bengals!

BB absolutely loves the way he runs and to be honest I really don't get it. He doesn't really run with power, especially for a guy his size. He isn't fast or shifty. BB's even got him returning kicks because he likes the way he runs. He's been decent for us but I don't see anything spectacular in him. I think he's a solid #2 back that can wear defenses down in the second half just by being big.

Just so we are clear. Here is his stats. He is a guy who is a 1000 yard rusher. There are about 15 or 20 of them every year but, it is the standard we look at and he has met it in the past. So we aren't taking about an "also ran" player. His second year he declined a bit and by his third year with Tampa he was replaced. Whatever the problems with Tampa were, he appears to have found new life in NE. That said, the jury is out on how he will show up over the long term. It does look promising though as part of the running back by committee approach that NE uses.

    I am hopeful...

As far as him taking Ridley's job, I am not sure that Ridley was ever the feature back anyway. Ridley was just one of a cadre of backs that a few got selected from week to week. Unless he plays like Corey Dillon, in my view, the Patriots will continue with the committee approach for the foreseeable future.

I know he's had a decent YPC most of his career, but just based on what I saw (could be wrong) his YPC was inflated due to one or two huge runs per game. Like someone else mentioned, he has the size to be a power back, but when he was in TB I always noticed he'd average like 2 YPC until he broke off a huge run and would bump it up to 5 YPC. I thought he'd be a pretty good HB and was glad TB got rid of him.

He wasn't a pro-bowler as far as I know. Could you point to the selection or year or any indication that this is true?

OK, well, I don't know about the fact you believe he sucks but I expect you are entitled to believe that. He clearly hasn't demonstrated greatness. Maybe, in your view, if a player isn't great, he sucks. A high standard to be sure...

Blount doesn't suck. He's not great but to say he sucks is a huge overstatement. He's ok.

I'm not sure he's unfairly rated in either direction. He mostly just is what he is...and that's an OK running back. But he's gonna get a good chance to prove something now with Vereen and now Ridley being out.

He's useless in the passing game, and a mediocre runner that had one or two highlight reel type runs with TB. He sucks. He's a totally replaceable player.

Yep. He is what he is. It helps having a good QB and great Oline.

I don't disagree but for being so slow and plodding he breaks off a lot of long runs it seems like. It's odd to me
