For years we found ways to justify keeping a good punter by paying him an inordinate amount of money. His leadership on a losing team was talked about ad naseam. Fans rallied around him when she spoke out against his owner when Tom Cable was fired, the same owner that made him the highest paid P of all time. Now he's moved on and he was replaced by Marqette King, an undrafted FA from Fort Valley State. King has matched Lechler's production this far and has not had a TD return against him like Lechler. Two week ago, Lechler prepared for a punt. One announcer was talking about him strong leg and high career average. The other announcer (Dierdorf?) said that he tends to out kick his coverage at times. He repeated himself while the ball was in the air. Lechler indeed outkicked the coverage and the punt was returned for a TD.
IMO, Lechler was all that was right and all that was wrong with the Davis Era. Lechler was a bold pick that paid off. He was also made into a trophy player by Davis and was elevated to mythical status by fans who saw him as one of the only players on the team that were one of the best in the league at their position. No one seemed to realize that if you leader is your punter, the teams problems are beyond description.
Right now, the Raiders new regime did a great thing for the betterment of the team by getting rid of Lechler and his contract. They also made a mistake by not also ousting Janokowski and extending his contract. The good part is this administration, unlike that last, will not hesitate to correct the wrongs they have made moving forward. There's your breath of fresh air.
