    NFL Considering Expanded Playoffs

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/97...on-sources-say

The NFL is urgently discussing a new scheduling formula that would include a three-game preseason and could also feature an expanded postseason field from 12 to 14 teams, sources league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen.

The expanded postseason proposal would offset teams' lost revenue from the elimination of a preseason game, and it also could lead to additional television revenues for the league.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell alluded to the league's interest in the new scheduling model during an interview with NFL.com this past week, although he said the changes likely would not happen in 2014.

But sources told ESPN that the changes could still be implemented as early as 2014 if the NFL can procure the necessary votes from team owners. The league also would need to establish a new preseason scheduling formula, get sponsorship agreements and resolves a few stadium lease issues, sources said.

The NFL's competition committee recommended the three-game preseason model as the minimum necessary period for player evaluation and development, sources said.
Didn't know if this was already posted but i have to say i don't like the idea at all.

I'd guess this would mean that the only the one seed from each conference would get a bye? I honestly wouldn't hate this.

Yeah there is no reason why the NFL should water down their playoff system like the NHL and especially the NBA have.

I think NFL teams need 4 preseason games. That or more practice time in the off season. I remember week 1 having a lot of pretty ugly football.

I'm OK with the playoff system as it is.
    Go Knicks!

Horrible decision. Probably will happen because of greedy owners, but stupid decision. How many teams with losing records are going to make the playoffs now?

If we're only adding one team from each conference, probably none.

The words of basket weavers and hunters.

Anyways, any two teams from the Bears, Lions, Saints, Packers, Falcons, Niners, and Seahawks will miss the playoffs. I'd rather see more good teams in the playoffs. Two of these teams have to miss because a mediocre garbage team has to get in from the NFC East. That's a lot more flawed than more good teams making it.

This scenario doesn't happen too often. I believe it would be the 3rd time in the last 10 seasons that it has. Teams have less time to evaluate players and incorporate rookies, while players have less time to get into season form. Also, it's more wear and tear when the NFL is supposed to be trying to increase player safety. Unfortunately it isn't about adding more playoff teams, it's about earning the NFL more money and there's a lot more problems than the NFL not making enough money
