I disagree. I don't like the move at all. Opt to keep McLaren and Orr and sign them first this past off-season, but trade a youthful prospect with upside? I don't get it. Great deal for Calgary. Dumb for us.
Move doesn't bother me a bit. I hope Joe can turn into a good player but it wasn't happening here and the opportunity was there for him. He's been inconsistant at every level since the day he was drafted. We signed Raymond, didn't trade Kule, got Kadri and Franson locked up and Reilly's going to get an audition. I think we did good.
capgeek has the Leafs sitting at 124,000 in cap space after burying Liles. That number includes Morgan Rielly making the team, as well as Carter Ashton making the team. They also waived Smith, Bodie, Holzer, Brennan, and McIntyre and I assume one of Smith or Bodie will be recalled to replace McLaren who will go on IR if he's still out. There's probably also a small chance they go with 7 D and 11 forwards to have both Rielly and Fraser in the lineup. The Leafs presumably look like this on opening night...
James van Riemsdyk - Tyler Bozak - Phil Kessel
Joffrey Lupul - Nazem Kadri - Mason Raymond
Carter Ashton - Dave Bolland - Nikolai Kulemin
Troy Bodie/Trevor Smith - Jay McClement - Colton Orr
Dion Phaneuf - Carl Gunnarsson
Jake Gardiner - Cody Franson (I hope)
Paul Ranger - Morgan Rielly
Interesting look. Need all those forwards to get through the first 10 games without a scratch. Not much left if somebody gets hurt...
Seems like a bit of a lazy move to get under the cap. Nice looking 'spec, but ultimately the signing of Bozak to those dollars, Joe's injury history, and Rielly and ashton making the team; have this sort of fallout. Burke had best be putting in a waiver claim on Liles for this favour!
