This team still is underacheiving! Honestly, I lost touch with this team in the last month or so because they were just so frustrating. Good starting pitching would warrant a bullpen blow up. Good hitting would warrant a bad starter outing. Don Kelly, Ramon Santiago, and others in the lineup too often, Putkonen/Reed/and others coming out of the pen too often. It has been driving me nuts. Maybe it's because we have become spoiled in the fact that over the last few years we have been in the playoffs so often that we expect it and more but this team should have walked away with the title long ago and it just seems as if they kept teasing us.
Going into the post season I am not nearly as confident as I had been in past years. It just seems to me that we can't really count on anyone other than Scherzer, Sanchez, and Cabrerra to consistently put in a good game or outing. All the others have been sporatic at best. My confidence level, especially knowing that Jim will throw a Santiago/Kelly out there on a whim, has been at an all time low lately.
This team will need an infusion of change next year, IMO. Yes, Inglesias is a fun toy to have going into next year and the thought of Nick in left field is encouraging but we are going to need to do something with one of our rotation guys to bolster our prospects. We're also going to need to make a decision on our bullpen. Guys like Coke, Alberquerque, Putkonen, Downs, etc.. just are not cutting it for me. One other guy that I would like to see play next year consistently is Perez. I know Infante has played extremely well but at what cost do we cut ties with him? I think getting Inglesias and Perez playing time together is compareable to the young tandem of Alan and Lou. I'd like to see us get younger at 2nd and LF, run more next year, and move a starter to make room for Smyly. Then fill the pen with some FA. This will not only prepare us for next year but in the future as well.
In the playoff's I hope that this team finally gets it's crap straight and makes a big run. They are very capable but it's a matter of being consistent and Jim letting the better players play. He needs to forget about his favorites and play the guys that need to be in the game, the whole game, the whole series. Less changes to the lineup, more innings for the starters. We can win it all or we could be out in the first series. That's just how this team has played this year. Eat'm up Tigers.
