    Leon Washington

Source: Jets interested in Leon Washington

The New York Jets are showing interest in an old favorite, free-agent kickoff returner Leon Washington, a league source confirmed. Washington, released by the New England Patriots in the final cut-down, also has drawn interest from the Giants. He worked out for them Tuesday.

After cutting Joe McKnight, whom they drafted in 2010 to replace Washington, the Jets may be looking for a new kickoff returner. Right now, the job probably belongs to Clyde Gates. Washington, 31, made the Pro Bowl last season with a 29.0 average and one touchdown. He also could be a change-of-back back and a strong locker-room presence. The Jets have three backs on the roster, plus the suspended Mike Goodson.

General manager John Idzik was a Seahawks executive during Washington's three-year run in Seattle. The Jets could wait until after Week 1 to make a move on Washington. As a vested veteran, his salary wouldn't be guaranteed if he signs after the first game.

Washington was a popular and productive player with the Jets from 2006 to 2009, when he suffered a severe broken leg. Contract negotiations turned acrimonious and he was dealt to Seattle. TheJetsBlog.com first noted the interest in Washington.

I'd like the Jets to bring him back to be a 3rd down back/returner

Eh. I'd like to have him cause I like him as a player, but he isn't going to make or break anything.

Also I think we are bring Braylon back after week one to avoid his contract being guarantied. So IF that is correct we'd have to cut 2 others to make room for a kick off specialist in a league getting rid of the kickoff. Obviously we are not soo talented that we can't afford to cut a couple of guys but depth at the position should be a factor as well.

like the move but who do we cut??? I think we should just hold out til Goodson comes back if its strictly for him to be a returner

def could use the upgrade on kick returns and he can help as a passing down back which we dont have right now

def worth a shot but ppl who remember him running down the sideline vs the dolphins in 2006 are going to be dissapointed because he is barely an asset anymore

If it wasn't for him trying to break the bank earlier in his career with the Jets, he probably would have been starting RB for a few years here.

Supposedly his locker in NE was left in tact after he was released. I think they cut him with the intention of bringing him back after week 1 so his contract isn't guaranteed. He's a Patriot now!!!

Yeah taking Leon Washington from you guys wouldn't really make up for you guys taking Curtis Martin. I think you guys win that one by a little bit.
