How much is Mike Trout worth?

Recently, I was asked what I think turns out to be a pretty interesting thought experiment: if Mike Trout was released by the Angels and became a free agent, but decided he did not want to sign long term with any other team and simply preferred to go year to year instead, where would the bidding war for a single year of Troutís services end up?

This question gets at a lot of different points, many of them kind of fascinating. What percentage of a teamís total payroll can be allocated to one player while still leaving enough flexibility to put a contender around a superstar? Is a team better off allocating a majority of their available dollars to a few premium assets, then using low-cost filler to round out the roster, or by spreading their money around to multiple players in order to reduce the risk of one injury or a single bad year ruining their entire season? Should a team prefer an +8 WAR player over two +4 WAR players for the same cost?

Is there any contending team that wouldn't pay him 35 million for his 2014 season? If possible.

Depending on the team, possibly. A one year deal? Very possible.

A one year deal for a contender is 40 - 45 if you can swing. I think a team like LA or NY would win the bid with a high of 50. It would make a lot of sense for a team like the Braves that have average starters at every position but CF. Trout would take them from 90-95 wins to 100-105.

90 million for one year on the FA market going by what Senor Shapiro of the Indians said last year/earlier this year. Too literal so adjust however you like and 40 million a year over 5 or even 10 years is a good deal. It'd be insane but sports has that kind of money.

More than what he's currently making.

I don't know, the usual bidders would say Yankees and Dodgers. Also the Redsox, my guess would be $40 million. And that's far stretched.

    25 million a season.
    Favourite Teams:

Boston Red Sox: 5-8, games this week vs. Chicago White Sox (3), Baltimore (3)
Indianapolis Colts: 11-5, 2013 AFC South Champs, great season guys.
Looking for new NBA team to cheer for
Ottawa Senators: 37-31-14, season over, good effort guys.

Psh. For a 21-22 year old who is either the best or second best player in the league? That would be a steal.
You have no idea how excited I am right now.

So you'd be willing to pay him 5 billion. That's stupid.

Seriously, wouldn't be shocked if a team like the Yanks or Dodgers offered him 50ish million.

Let's put it this way, the money they spent on those 2 over paid FA's, Pooholes and Hamilton, should have been spent on Trout.

    ahhh... the good ole days
