The Hockey News Top-50 Players for 2013-2014

THN just sent out their new list. It's actually really bad. Bolded are too high, italicized are too low. It is:

    1. Crosby
    2. Ovechkin
    3. Stamkos
    4. Karlsson
    5. Tavares
    6. Toews
    7. Malkin
    8. Kane
    9. Bergeron
    10. Doughty
    11. Datsyuk
    12. St. Louis
    13. Quick
    14. Keith
    15. Chara
    16. Giroux
    17. Suter
    18. Carter
    19. Spezza
    20. Hall
    21. Staal
    22. Kopitar
    23. Subban
    24. Lundqvist
    25. Letang
    26. Zetterberg
    27. Weber
    28. Couture
    29. Parise
    30. Perry
    31. Rask
    32. Hossa
    33. Getzlaf
    34. Eberle
    35. Bobrovsky
    36. Anderson
    37. Lucic
    38. Crawford
    39. Vanek
    40. Benn
    41. Kessel
    42. Pietrangelo
    43. Krejci
    44. Sedin
    45. Sedin
    46. Backes
    47. Yandle
    48. Price
    49. Smith
    50. Kronwall

So Yandle over OEL, Price over Howard and Niemi, Towes over Malkin, Doughty over Chara, Eberle over Kessel and Couture over Getzlaf? They get paid for this crap list? This is a really bad list.

I like seeing AO at number 2. I remember so many hockey fans and media were basically writing the guy off last January/February.

They wrote him off for a very good reason.

Any list with Malkin outside the top 4 is ridiculous

I agree, it is pretty gross. The Sedin twins at 44 & 45 is also pretty sketchy. Cory Crawford at 38? Really?...

Tavares fifth is a joke. Ovechkin second is a joke. Toews sixth is a joke based on who they're putting him ahead of. Carter sixteenth is a joke. Quick THAT FAR ahead of Lundqvist is a joke. The King is still the number one goalie in the league as far as I'm concerned. Giroux should definitely be higher. Still trying to figure out why Voracek isn't on there after putting up 46 points in 48 games and scoring 22 goals. Malkin seventh is probably the biggest joke of them all. I don't understand how he is not second.

It's actually really tough when you're throwing in all of the positions. I tried to do my Top-20 and it was difficult. I guess I can see why lists would be so drastically different and why pretty much everyone would have a differing opinion of who should fall where. Plus take into account the "homer effect". This could be an interesting thread. How about we try something like "Rank Your Top-50", but instead of overall we do your Top-20 Forwards, Top-20 Defensemen, and Top-10 Goalies. Rank em however you want.

    Here's mine:

    Top-20 Forwards:
    1. Crosby
    2. Malkin
    3. Stamkos
    4. Giroux
    5. Toews
    6. Ovechkin
    7. Datsyuk
    8. Kane
    9. Bergeron
    10. Tavares
    11. St. Louis
    12. Kopitar
    13. Zetterberg
    14. Perry
    15. H. Sedin
    16. Getzlaf
    17. Benn
    18. Voracek
    19. D. Sedin
    20. Hossa

    Top-20 Defenseman:
    1. Karlsson
    2. Doughty
    3. Suter
    4. Keith
    5. Chara
    6. Weber
    7. Subban
    8. Letang
    9. Pietrangelo
    10. OEL
    11. Yandle
    12. McDonagh
    13. Kronwall
    14. Campbell
    15. Del Zotto
    16. Shattenkirk
    17. J. Johnson
    18. Streit
    19. Girardi
    20. Timonen

    Top-10 Goalies:
    1. Lundqvist
    2. Quick
    3. Rask
    4. Rinne
    5. Bobrovsky
    6. Anderson
    7. Howard
    8. Niemi
    9. Crawford
    10. Smith

I've stated it before and I'll state it again...I like to make bold predictions. Most times I fall on my face, but sometimes I get it right. Also had to make an edit. I completely forgot Ovie haha.

You having Kane ahead of Toews is the biggest joke of all.

I know I did this too quickly haha. I'm editing it. I meant to change some things around and forgot, which included me bypassing Ovie altogether haha.

I'm a Hawks fan and this list has Kane way too high. So is Bergy. Malkin outside the top 5 is absurd. Really a bad list.

I'm surprised you're that hard on Kane. I absolutely love him haha. Even though he did ruin my hopes and dreams by scoring that bullcrap goal to win the cup in 2010...thank you, Michael Leighton. It really is a bad list. I cannot even begin to understand how Malkin lies outside the top 3. When I saw that I knew the list was not going to tickle anyones fancy, except maybe Caps fans.

I'm a big two way player guy. To Kane's credit he's gone from awful to about average on defense, but to me you can't put him ahead of guys like Datsyuk, Giroux and Kopitar. If Hossa could stay healthy, I'd put him ahead of Kane as well. Don't get me wrong, I love Kane, he's amazing with the puck.

Fair enough! I made an edit and moved him down a bit. I see your point though, two-way play is a big part of the game when it comes to being a forward. I'd like to see Voracek improve in that regard. I'm very excited to see what he can do this season and if he can keep up that type of production playing alongside G full-time.

Ov, Karlsson, Toews, and Tavares all are not even close to better than Malkin
